TOP STORYStudy Resolves Long-Disputed Theory About Stem Cell Populations Researchers identified key characteristics that distinguish reserve stem cells from other stem cell populations that had been purported to have similar properties. The work, which employed single-cell gene expression analyses as well as other cutting-edge techniques, demonstrated that, in the intestines, reserve stem cells are a distinct population from so-called “label-retaining cells”. PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)INTESTINAL CANCERS & DISEASESResearchers showed that CD146 knockdown induces stem cell properties in colorectal cancer cells through activating canonical Wnt signaling. [Oncotarget] Full Article A Novel TP53 Pathway Influences the HGS-Mediated Exosome Formation in Colorectal Cancer The features of exosomes secreted from HCT116 TP53-wild type, TP53-knockout and constructed TP53-mutant cells were assessed. [Sci Rep] Full Article Researchers showed that expression of mu-protocadherin is negatively regulated by functional activation of the β-catenin signaling pathway. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article Characterization of V. cholerae T3SS-Dependent Cytotoxicity in Cultured Intestinal Epithelial Cells Investigators examined the role of bile, sought to identify the mechanism, and evaluated the contributions of Type 3 Secretion System translocated effectors in in vitro cell death. Their results suggest that Caco2-BBE cytotoxicity does not proceed by apoptotic or necrotic mechanisms, but rather displays characteristics consistent with osmotic lysis. [Cell Microbiol] Abstract Rad51C-ATXN7 Fusion Gene Expression in Colorectal Tumors Scientists found a fusion gene between DNA repair gene Rad51C and neuro-cerebral ataxia Ataxin-7 gene in colorectal tumors. [Mol Cancer] Full Article Investigators found that expression of HOTAIRM1 was reduced in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues compared with matched normal tissues, and plasma HOTAIRM1 levels in CRC patients were less than in controls. [J Cell Mol Med] Abstract Researchers analyzed the intestinal phenotype of GSK3 knockin mice in which N-terminal serines 21/9 of glycogen synthase kinase 3α/β have been mutated to non-phosphorylatable alanine residues. [PLoS One] Full Article The Role of Probiotics in Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Autophagy in Intestinal Epithelial Cells The authors assessed the effect of probiotics on lipopolysaccharide-induced physical barrier dysfunction and the underlying mechanism of probiotic action in intestinal epithelial cells with a focus on autophagy. REVIEWShPSC-Derived Lung and Intestinal Organoids as Models of Human Fetal Tissue The authors discuss current methods for differentiating lung and intestinal tissue from human pluripotent stem cell (hPSCs) into individual 3-dimensional units called organoids.
