Spermine Synthase and MYC Cooperate to Maintain Colorectal Cancer Cell Survival by Repressing Bim Expression

Researchers uncovered a key survival signal in colorectal cancer through convergent repression of Bim expression by distinct spermine synthase and MYC-mediated signaling pathways.

Exosomes Transfer miRNAas from Cell-To-Cell to Inhibit Autophagy During Infection with Crohn’s Disease-Associated Adherent-Invasive E. coli

Investigators showed that upon Adherent-invasive E. coli (AIEC) infection, intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) secreted exosomes that could transfer specific miRNAs to recipient IECs, inhibiting autophagy-mediated clearance of intracellular AIEC.

    Abstract

MiR-200b in Heme Oxygenase-1-Modified Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes Alleviates Inflammatory Injury of Intestinal Epithelial Cells by Targeting High Mobility Group Box 3

Scientists identified that exosomes derived from HO-1/BMMSCs played an important role in alleviating the inflammatory injury of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). The mechanism was related to miR-200b targeting the abnormally increased expression of the high mobility group box 3 (HMGB) gene in IECs induced by inflammatory injury.

Enalapril Overcomes Chemoresistance and Potentiates Antitumor Efficacy of 5-FU in Colorectal Cancer by Suppressing Proliferation, Angiogenesis, and NF-κB/stat3-Regulated Proteins

Researchers verified enalapril, a clinically widely used antihypertensive and anti-heart failure drug, as a chemosensitizer that improved sensitivity of colorectal cancer cells to 5-Fluorouracil.

Wnt-Driven LARGE2 Mediates Laminin-Adhesive O-Glycosylation in Human Colonic Epithelial Cells and Colorectal Cancer

Investigators revealed that Wnt activity triggered the expression of the gene, LARGE2, which in turn mediated the laminin- adhesive O-glycosylation of α-DG. They found abnormally increased cellular adhesion to laminin during Wnt-driven cancer progression.

Artificial Sweeteners Disrupt Tight Junctions and Barrier Function in the Intestinal Epithelium through Activation of the Sweet Taste Receptor, T1R3

The authors demonstrated that the artificial sweeteners sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin exerted a range of negative effects on the intestinal epithelium through the sweet taste receptor T1R3.

CD47 Is a Negative Regulator of Intestinal Epithelial Cell Self-Renewal Following DSS-Induced Experimental Colitis

Researchers revealed CD47 as a negative regulator in intestinal epithelial cell renewal during colitis through downregulating OSKM transcriptional factors.

PRP4 Kinase Domain Loss Nullifies Drug Resistance and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Human Colorectal Carcinoma Cells

Scientists suggested that the pre-mRNA processing factor 4B kinase domain was responsible for promoting drug resistance to curcumin by inducing EMT.

    Abstract

Amending Microbiota by Targeting Intestinal Inflammation with TNF Blockade Attenuates Development of Colorectal Cancer

Using chemically induced and spontaneous mouse colorectal cancer (CRC) models colonized by colibactin-producing Escherichia coli, scientists established the role of microbiota in mediating the antitumorigenic effect of anti–tumor necrosis factor therapy.

NIH’s New Sexual-Harassment Rules are Still Too Weak, Say Critics

On 24 June, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) described the actions it will take when alerted to reports of unsafe behaviour, including restricting scientists from peer-review panels, holding back pending grants and refusing university requests to transfer funding to other institutions in cases where a harasser changes jobs.

Graduate Programs Drop GRE after Online Version Raises Concerns about Fairness

Scores of academics have raised concerns about the equity of the online version of the test, arguing it disadvantages prospective students from rural and low-income backgrounds. “If I were … a student trying to take this exam, satisfying criteria would be extremely difficult for me,” says Emily Levesque, an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Washington, Seattle.
