    TOP STORY
MicroRNA Hinders Enzyme that Promotes Breast Cancer Spread to Brain
A small piece of genetic material stops the activity of an enzyme known to promote the spread of breast tumors to the brain, said a group of researchers. [Press release from the Baylor College of Medicine discussing online prepublication in Cancer Research]

    SCIENCE NEWS

Destined for Disease: Breast Cancer Mutation Regulates Cell Fate
A new study sheds light on why individuals who inherit a particular family of mutations have a high risk of developing a very aggressive form of breast cancer. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing online prepublication in Cell Stem Cell]

Limited Lymph Node Removal for Certain Breast Cancer Does Not Appear to Result in Poorer Survival
Among patients with early-stage breast cancer that had spread to a nearby lymph node and who received treatment that included lumpectomy and radiation therapy, women who just had the sentinel lymph node removed did not have worse survival than women who had more extensive axillary lymph node dissection, according to a study. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing online prepublication in The Journal of the American Medical Association]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)
    LABORATORY RESEARCH

Self-Organization Is a Dynamic and Lineage-Intrinsic Property of Mammary Epithelial Cells
Using normal human mammary epithelial cells enriched into pools of the two principal lineages, luminal and myoepithelial cells, scientists demonstrated that bilayered organization in mammary epithelium was driven mainly by lineage-specific differential E-cadherin expression, but that P-cadherin contributed specifically to organization of the myoepithelial layer. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

MicroRNA-1258 Suppresses Breast Cancer Brain Metastasis by Targeting Heparanase
Using miRanda and RNAhybrid, researchers identified miR-1258 as a candidate microRNA that may directly target heparanase and suppress brain metastatic breast cancer. [Cancer Res]

The Adaptor Protein AMOT Promotes the Proliferation of Mammary Epithelial Cells via the Prolonged Activation of the Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinases
This study demonstrates that the adaptor protein AMOT, in addition to its established role in regulating cellular asymmetry, also promotes ERK1/2 dependent proliferation of mammary cells. [Cancer Res]

ETV6-NTRK3–Mediated Breast Epithelial Cell Transformation Is Blocked by Targeting the IGF1R Signaling Pathway
Investigators describe a breast cancer model based on expression of the ETV6-NTRK3 chimeric tyrosine kinase that suggests novel therapeutic applications of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) inhibitors in secretory breast cancers. [Cancer Res]

Heat Shock Protein Hsp72 Plays an Essential Role in Her2-Induced Mammary Tumorigenesis
Scientists investigated the role of Hsp72 in Her2 oncogene-induced neoplastic transformation and tumorigenesis. [Oncogene]

Vaccination With Human Anti-Trastuzumab Anti-Idiotype scFv Reverses HER2 Immunological Tolerance and Induces Tumor Immunity in MMTV.f.huHER2(Fo5) Mice
Investigators tested whether trastuzumab-selected single-chain Fv (scFv) could be used to develop an anti-idiotype-based vaccine to inhibit growth of HER2-positive tumor cells in vitro and in vivo through induction of long-lasting HER-specific immunity. [Breast Cancer Res]

Adipose Progenitor Cells Increase Fibronectin Matrix Strain and Unfolding in Breast Tumors
Researchers utilized a combination of biochemical and physical science tools to evaluate whether paracrine signaling between breast cancer cells and adipose progenitor cells regulates fibronectin matrix assembly and stiffness enhancement in the tumor stroma. [Phys Biol]

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

Axillary Dissection vs No Axillary Dissection in Women With Invasive Breast Cancer and Sentinel Node Metastasis
The objective of this study is to determine the effects of complete axillary lymph node dissection on survival of patients with sentinel lymph node metastasis of breast cancer. [JAMA]

Genetic Predisposition Directs Breast Cancer Phenotype by Dictating Progenitor Cell Fate
Investigators report here that breast epithelial cells derived from patients harboring deleterious mutations in BRCA1 (BRCA1mut/+) give rise to tumors with increased basal differentiation relative to cells from BRCA1+/+ patients. [Cell Stem Cell]

Outcomes of Positron Emission Tomography-Staged Clinical N3 Breast Cancer Treated with Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy, Surgery, and Radiotherapy
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the treatment outcome and efficacy of regional lymph node irradiation after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgery in positron emission tomography-positive clinical N3 breast cancer patients. [Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys]

    INDUSTRY NEWS
Johns Hopkins’ Andrew Ewald Honored by Anatomy Society
Andrew Ewald, Ph.D., who studies how cells build organs and how these same cellular processes can contribute to breast cancer metastasis, will receive the American Association of Anatomists’ 2011 Morphological Sciences Award for his “outstanding contributions to the field of epithelial morphogenesis.” [Johns Hopkins Medicine Press Release]

UCLB & BD Reach Exclusive License Agreement
UCL Business (UCLB) and BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) announced an agreement aimed at improving the early detection of ovarian and breast cancers to ultimately enable earlier and more effective treatment. [University College London (UCL) Business Press Release]

Pfizer Said to Pay $330 Million in Prempro Settlement
Pfizer Inc. agreed to pay about $330 million to resolve claims that its Prempro menopause drug caused breast cancer, in the first large-scale settlements in eight years of litigation, two people familiar with the accords said. [Bloomberg BusinessWeek]
