    TOP STORY
Mammary Stem Cells Have Myoepithelial Cell Properties
Researchers observed that up to 54% of single basal cells can form colonies when seeded into adherent culture in the presence of agents that disrupt actin-myosin interactions, and on average, 65% of the single-cell-derived basal colonies can repopulate a mammary gland when transplanted in vivo. [Nat Cell Biol] Abstract

    LABORATORY RESEARCH

The Chemokine Receptor CXCR7 Interacts with EGFR to Promote Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation
Researchers examined the pattern of CXCR7 expression and its role in regulation of growth signaling in breast cancer. CXCR7 was expressed in both, estrogen receptor positive and negative breast cancer cell lines. [Mol Cancer] Abstract | Full Article

AR Collaborates with ERα in Aromatase Inhibitor-Resistant Breast Cancer
Researchers engineered estrogen receptor (ER)-positive MCF-7 cells to overexpress aromatase and androgen receptor (AR) to explore the role of AR in aromatase inhibitor resistance. [Breast Cancer Res Treat] Abstract

Increased Androgen Receptor Activity and Cell Proliferation in Aromatase Inhibitor-Resistant Breast Carcinoma
The purpose of this study was to examine the potential correlation between the androgen receptor- and aromatase inhibitors (AI)-resistant breast carcinoma. Scientists performed immunohistochemical analysis of 21 pairs of primary breast carcinoma and corresponding AI-resistant recurrent tissue samples and established two stable variant cell lines from ER-positive T-47D breast carcinoma cell line as AI-resistance models and used them in in vitro experiments. [J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol] Abstract

NF-κB Affects Proliferation and Invasiveness of Breast Cancer Cells by Regulating CD44 Expression
Researchers analyzed the role of NF-κB in regulating CD44 expression in triple negative breast cancer cells, MDA-MB-231 and SUM159. Inhibition of NF-κB by Bay-11-7082 resulted in a reduction in CD44 expression. [PLoS One] Full Article

Chlorpyrifos Inhibits Cell Proliferation through ERK1/2 Phosphorylation in Breast Cancer Cell Lines
Scientists aimed to identify the pathway involved in chlorpyrifos-inhibited cell proliferation in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. [Chemosphere] Abstract

Estrogen Increases Nrf2 Activity through Activation of the PI3K Pathway in MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells
Researchers report that estrogen increases nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) activity in MCF7 breast cancer cells through activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta pathway. [Exp Cell Res] Abstract

SLIT/ROBO2 Signaling Promotes Mammary Stem Cell Senescence by Inhibiting Wnt Signaling
Scientists demonstrate that SLIT2 restricts stem cell renewal by signaling through ROBO2 in a subset of basal cells to negatively regulate WNT signaling. [Stem Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

Primary Results of ROSE/TRIO-12, a Randomized Placebo-Controlled Phase III Trial Evaluating the Addition of Ramucirumab to First-Line Docetaxel Chemotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer
The ROSE/TRIO-012 trial evaluated ramucirumab with docetaxel in unresectable, locally recurrent, or metastatic breast cancer. [J Clin Oncol] Abstract

Membranous Nectin-4 Expression Is a Risk Factor for Distant Relapse of T1-T2, N0 Luminal-A Early Breast Cancer
Researchers evaluated the association between the expression of Nectin-4 and the clinical outcome of patients with node-negative, T1/T2 breast cancers. The study group consisted of 197 patients presenting with primary unilateral breast carcinoma (T1/T2), with no evidence of nodal involvement and distant metastases. [Oncogenesis] Full Article
