DLK-1 as a Marker to Distinguish Unrestricted Somatic Stem Cells and Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Cord Blood
Constitutive overexpression of delta-like 1/preadipocyte factor 1 (DLK-1/PREF1) in cord blood mesenchymal stromal cells resulted in a reduced adipogenic differentiation, whereas silencing of DLK-1 in unrestricted somatic stem cells resulted in adipogenic differentiation. [Stem Cells Dev]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Sprouty1 is a Critical Regulatory Switch of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Lineage Allocation
Researchers tested whether Sprouty1 can modify the development of fat cells through its activity in regulating growth factors known to be important for adipogenesis. [FASEB J]

Receptor Activity Modifying Protein-3 Mediates the Protumorigenic Activity of Lysyl Oxidase-Like Protein-2
To understand the mechanisms involved, researchers examined the effect of lysyl oxidase-like protein-2 overexpression in MCF-7 cells on gene expression. [FASEB J]

siRNA Nanoparticle Functionalization of Nanostructured Scaffolds Enables Controlled Multilineage Differentiation of Stem Cells
Engineered morphogenesis necessitates spatially controlled development of multiple cell types within a scaffold implant. [Mol Ther]

Polysaccharide-Based Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Surface Coatings can Enhance Mesenchymal Stem Cell Response to Adsorbed Growth Factors
The goal of this work was to develop polysaccharide-based polyelectrolyte multilayers to bind and stabilize growth factors for delivery to mesenchymal stem cells. [Biomacromolecules]

Identification of a Common Gene Expression Signature Associated with Immature Clonal Mesenchymal Cell Populations Derived from Bone Marrow and Dental Tissues
In the present study researchers isolated and characterized clonal populations of mesenchymal stem/stromal cell-like populations derived from adult bone marrow, dental pulp, and periodontal ligament to identify potential biomarkers associated with long-lived multipotential stem cells. [Stem Cells Dev]

Shipping of Therapeutic Somatic Cell Products
This validation study provides a useful set of data for guiding shipments of therapeutic somatic cells in multi-institutional clinical trials. [Cytotherapy]

Prolonged Hypoxic Culture and Trypsinization Increase the Pro-Angiogenic Potential of Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells
Researchers hypothesized that prolonged hypoxic (1% and 5% oxygen) culture and trypsinization would augment adipose tissue-derived stem cell (ASC) expression of anti-apoptotic and angiogenic cytokines and increase the angiogenic potential of ASC-conditioned media. [Cytotherapy]

Fibrin Glues in Combination with Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Develop a Tissue-Engineered Cartilage Substitute
Fresh fibrin and platelet-rich fibrin glues produced by the CryoSeal® FS System, in combination with human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells, were evaluated in this study. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Temporal Exposure to Chondrogenic Factors Modulates Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Chondrogenesis in Hydrogels
Researchers investigated how cell density and temporal exposure to chondrogenic factors impacted chondrogenesis of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) encapsulated in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate hydrogels. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Adipose-Tissue-Derived and Wharton’s Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Suppress Lymphocyte Responses by Secreting Leukemia Inhibitory Factor
In this study, researchers investigated the capacity of mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue and Wharton’s jelly to modulate lymphocyte proliferation as well as their impact on regulatory T-cells. [Tissue Eng Part A]
