Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Isolated by a Novel Explantation Technique Can Differentiate into Functional Endothelial Cells and Promote Revascularization
Researchers report on the development of a simple and effective protocol to isolate umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells, and confirm their endothelial potential both in vitro and in vivo. [Stem Cells Dev]

    SCIENCE NEWS

How Physical Environment Influences Stem Cell Development
Recent research has revealed how physical qualities — and not only chemical ones — may have an influence in determining how adult stem cells from the bone marrow develop into differentiated ones. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing online prepublication in Nature Physics]

New Evidence that Fat Cells Are not Just Dormant Storage Depots for Calories
Scientists are reporting new evidence that the fat tissue in those spare tires and lower belly pooches — far from being a dormant storage depot for surplus calories — is an active organ that sends chemical signals to other parts of the body, perhaps increasing the risk of heart attacks, cancer, and other diseases. [Press release from the American Chemical Society discussing online prepublication in the Journal of Proteome Research]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Puma is Required for p53-Induced Depletion of Adult Stem Cells
To investigate the roles of DNA damage and p53 in tissue-regenerative capability, two phosphorylation-site mutations (T21D and S23D) were introduced into the endogenous p53 gene in mice, so that the synthesized protein mimics phosphorylated p53. [Nat Cell Biol]

Optimal Matrix Rigidity for Stress-Fiber Polarization in Stem Cells
The findings offer physical insight into the sensitivity of stem cell differentiation to tissue elasticity and, more generally, introduce a cell-type-specific parameter for actomyosin polarizability. [Nat Phys]

Tuberin Regulates E-Cadherin Localization – Implications in Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition
In this study, researchers show that tuberin regulates the localization of E-cadherin via an Akt/mTORC1/CLIP170-dependent, rapamycin-sensitive pathway. Consequently, Tsc2(-/-) epithelial cells display a loss of plasma membrane E-cadherin that leads to reduced cell-cell adhesion. [Am J Pathol]

Identification of Novel Human Adipocyte Secreted Proteins by Using SGBS Cells
It can be concluded that Simpson Golabi Behmel syndrome (SGBS) cells are both a valid human cell model for adipocyte secretion profiling and for searching for novel human (pre)adipocytes secreted proteins. [J Proteome Res]

New Strategies for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Partial Rupture Using Bone Marrow Transplantation in Rats
The purpose of this study was to compare anterior cruciate ligament regeneration between animal groups subjected to intra-articular injection of fresh whole bone marrow cells, cultured mesenchymal stem cells or saline. [Stem Cells Dev]

Hypoxia and Amino Acid Supplementation Synergistically Promote the Osteogenesis of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Silk Protein Scaffolds
Silk protein scaffolds seeded with human mesenchymal stem cells in osteogenic differentiation media were used to study in vitro osteogenesis under varied conditions of amino acid (lysine and proline) concentration and oxygen level. [Tissue Eng Part A]

The Effect of Simulated Microgravity on Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Cultured in an Osteogenic Differentiation System: A Bioinformatics Study
The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of simulated microgravity on all genes expressed in human mesenchymal stem cells, with the underlying hypothesis that many important pathways are affected during culture within a rotating wall vessel system. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Improved Proliferation and Differentiation Capacity of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Cultured with Basement-Membrane Extracellular Matrix Proteins
The results suggest that expansion of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) in the presence of extracellular matrix proteins is a powerful approach for generating large numbers of MSC, showing a prolonged capacity to differentiate into mesodermal cell lineages, with the exception of the lack of chondrogenesis by using laminin-5 coating. [Cytotherapy]

Health Experts Warn of “Stem Cell Tourism” Dangers
Thousands of people are putting their health and life savings at risk to travel to private clinics around the world for unproven and potentially dangerous stem cell treatments, British experts said. [Reuters]

Responding to a court order, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ordered intramural researchers studying human embryonic stem cells to shut down their experiments. [National Institutes of Health, United States]

Obama Administration Appeals Stem Cell Injunction
The Obama administration asked a federal judge on to lift an injunction halting human embryonic stem cell research, saying it would irreparably harm research and cost more than 1,300 jobs. [The White House, United States]

NIH Asks Judge to Suspend Stem Cell Research Injunction
Warning of a “devastating impact” on ongoing research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) asked a federal court to stay a preliminary injunction that last week forced NIH to suspend future grant payments to study human embryonic stem cells (hESC) and shut down its in-house research on hESCs. [National Institutes of Health, United States]

Judge Upholds Stem Cell Funding Ban
A Washington, D.C., judge said this afternoon that his ruling two weeks ago, halting all federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, will stand while the case moves forward. Chief Judge Royce Lamberth, responding to a request from the Department of Justice that he stay his preliminary injunction, released a 3-page order denying the request.
