    TOP STORY

Suppression of Antitumor Immunity by Stromal Cells Expressing Fibroblast Activation Protein-Alpha
Researchers created a transgenic mouse in which fibroblast activation protein-alpha (FAP)-expressing cells can be ablated. Depletion of FAP-expressing cells, which made up only 2% of all tumor cells in established Lewis lung carcinomas, caused rapid hypoxic necrosis of both cancer and stromal cells in immunogenic tumors by a process involving interferon-gamma and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

WNT5A/JNK and FGF/MAPK Pathways Regulate the Cellular Events Shaping the Vertebrate Limb Bud
Researchers show that the mesenchymal cells of the early limb bud are not disorganized within the ectoderm as previously thought but are instead highly organized and polarized. [Curr Biol]

Chemotherapy Resistance in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Requires hERG1 Channels and is Overcome by hERG1 Blockers
The findings provide a rationale for clinical testing of hERG1 blockers in the context of antileukemic therapy for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [Blood]

The Effects of Culture on Genomic Imprinting Profiles in Human Embryonic and Fetal Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The results suggest that regardless of stem cell origin, in vitro culture affects the integrity of imprinted gene expression in human cells. [Epigenetics]

Low Doses of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 4 Increase the Survival of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Maintaining Their Stemness and Multipotency
In this study, researchers demonstrate that human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) express all components of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)/BMP receptor signaling pathway and respond to BMP4 inducing upregulated expression of its specific target genes Id1-Id4. [Stem Cells Dev]

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Stimulation of Tissue Growth Depends on Differentiation State
This study investigated the stimulatory capacity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) during osteogenesis and the impact of MSC phenotype on cartilage stimulation. [Stem Cells Dev]

Human Term Placenta-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells are Less Prone to Osteogenic Differentiation than Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Researchers conclude that mesenchymal stem cells from different sources differ in their expression of distinct markers, and that this may correlate in part with their lineage determination. [Stem Cells Dev]

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Contribute to the Abnormal Bone Marrow Microenvironment in Patients with Chronic Idiopathic Neutropenia by Overproduction of Transforming Growth Factor-Beta1
In this study, researchers investigated the possible involvement of bone marrow (BM) mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the pathophysiology of chronic idiopathic neutropenia by assessing the frequency and function of BM MSCs in terms of the proliferative/clonogenic characteristics, the differentiation capacity, the potential to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines and the ability to suppress T cell proliferation. [Stem Cells Dev]

Kidney-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Modulate Dendritic Cell Function to Suppress Alloimmune Responses and Delay Allograft Rejection
The results highlight an important mechanism of mesenchymal stromal cell-based immunotherapy and its potential for use in clinical transplantation as prevention of rejection and possibly sensitization. [Transplantation]

Mechanical Integrin Stress and Magnetic Forces Induce Biological Responses in Mesenchymal Stem Cells Which Depend on Environmental Factors
Together, the results implicate that biological functions of mesenchymal stem cells can be stimulated by integrin-mediated mechanical forces and a magnetic field. However, the responses of cells depend strongly on the substrate to which they adhere and on the cross talk between integrin mediated signals and soluble factors. [J Cell Biochem]

Consistent Osteoblastic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells With Bone Morphogenetic Protein 4 and Low Serum
In this study, researchers compared the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells induced by dexamethasone (Dex) or bone morphogenetic proteins by assessing phenotypes in vitro and functional osteoblasts in vivo. [Tissue Eng Part C Methods]
