    TOP STORY

Mesenchymal-Lineage Stem Cells Have Pronounced Anti-Inflammatory Effects in the Twitcher Mouse Model of Krabbe’s Disease
This study evaluates the effect of intracerebroventricular administration of mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue and bone marrow on the pathology of Krabbe’s disease. [Stem Cells]

    SCIENCE NEWS

Stem Cell Transplants in Mice Produce Lifelong Enhancement of Muscle Mass
The study shows that specific types of stem cells transplanted into the leg muscles of mice prevented the loss of muscle function and mass that normally occurs with aging, a finding with potential uses in treating humans with chronic, degenerative muscle diseases. [Press release from the University of Colorado at Boulder discussing online prepublication in Science Translational Medicine]

Umbilical Cord Cells May Treat Arthritis
Umbilical cord stem cells may be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Animal and in vitro experiments have shown that mesenchymal stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood can suppress inflammation and attenuate collagen-induced arthritis. [Press release from EurekAlert! discussing online prepublication in Arthritis Research and Therapy]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Express Serine Protease Inhibitor to Evade Host Immune Response
Researchers conclude that serpin protease inhibitor 6 (SPI6) protects mesenchymal stem cells from granzyme B-mediated killing and plays a pivotal role in their survival in vivo. [Blood]

Continual Expression Throughout the Cell Cycle and Downregulation upon Adipogenic Differentiation Makes Nucleostemin a Vital Human MSC Proliferation Marker
Nucleostemin (NS) is a nucleolar protein expressed in stem and cancer cells. This study analyzes the spatio-temporal (nucleolar/nuclear localization during interphase and M-phase) NS remodeling in two distinct human mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) populations to discriminate the NS differences, if any, throughout their stem cell and differentiation states. [Stem Cell Rev]

Wnt5b Regulates Mesenchymal Cell Aggregation and Chondrocyte Differentiation Through the Planar Cell Polarity Pathway
Although genetic evidence has demonstrated a role for Wnt5b during cartilage and limb development, little is known about the mechanisms underlying Wnt5b-regulated chondrocyte differentiation. Researchers observed that Wnt5b inhibited chondrocyte hypertrophy and expression of type X collagen. [J Cell Physiol]

NOS Inhibition Synchronizes Calcium Oscillations in Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Increasing Gap Junctional Coupling
The data demonstrate that intracellular nitric oxide levels regulate synchronization of intracellular calcium oscillations in undifferentiated adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells by controlling gap junctional coupling. [J Cell Physiol]

Therapeutic Potential of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) could be effective in the treatment of several autoimmune diseases. However, there has been thus far no report on umbilical cord (UC)-MSCs in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here, potential immunosuppressive effects of human UC-MSCs in RA were evaluated. [Arthritis Res Ther]

Prevention of Muscle Aging by Myofiber-Associated Satellite Cell Transplantation
Researchers demonstrate that engraftment of myofiber-associated satellite cells, coupled with an induced muscle injury, markedly alters the environment of young adult host muscle, eliciting a near-lifelong enhancement in muscle mass, stem cell number, and force generation. [Sci Transl Med]
