    TOP STORY

Cells ‘Feel’ the Difference Between Stiff or Soft and Thick or Thin Matrix
Cultured mesenchymal stem cells can “feel” at least several microns below the surface of an artificial microfilm matrix, gauging the elasticity of the extracellular bedding that is a crucial variable in determining their fate, researchers reported. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing data presented at the American Society for Cell Biology’s 50th Annual Meeting]

    SCIENCE NEWS

A ‘Stitch in Time’ Could Help Damaged Hearts
A research team shows that stem cells thrive on microthread sutures, creating a novel platform for cellular therapies that may regenerate cardiac tissue. [Press release from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute discussing online prepublication in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

A Mesoderm-Derived Precursor for Mesenchymal Stem and Endothelial Cells
Using human embryonic stem cells directed toward mesendodermal differentiation, researchers show that mesenchymal stem/stromal cells originate from a population of mesodermal cells identified by expression of apelin receptor. [Cell Stem Cell]

The Effects of Culture on Genomic Imprinting Profiles in Human Embryonic and Fetal Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Genes subject to epigenetic regulation via genomic imprinting have been characterized extensively. The integrity of imprinted gene expression therefore provides a measurable index for epigenetic stability. Allelic expression of 26 imprinted genes and DNA methylation at associated differentially methylated regions (DMRs) was measured in fetal mesenchymal stem cells and human embryonic stem cell lines. [Epigenetics]

Phenotypic Differences During the Osteogenic Differentiation of Single Cell-Derived Clones Isolated from Human Lipoaspirates
Single-cell clones were isolated and expanded from human lipoaspirate cells. Osteogenic differentiation was induced and studied in defined media, using four representative isolated cell clones showing differences in the basal expression of a set of characteristic osteogenic genes. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med]

Fibrin Microthreads Support Mesenchymal Stem Cell Growth While Maintaining Differentiation Potential
To assess the efficacy of fibrin microthreads to support human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) attachment, proliferation, and survival, microthreads (100 micrometer diameter per microthread) were bundled together, seeded with 50,000 hMSCs for 2 hours, and cultured for 5 days. [J Biomed Mater Res A]

Correlation Between Compositional and Mechanical Properties of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Collagen Microspheres During Chondrogenic Differentiation
In this study, a novel human mesenchymal stem cell-collagen microsphere system was used to study the compositional mechanical relationship during in vitro chondrogenic differentiation using histological and biochemical methods and a microplate compression assay. [Tissue Eng Part A]
