TGF(beta)-Mediated Sox10 Suppression Controls Mesenchymal Progenitor Generation in Neural Crest Stem Cells
Here researchers show that TGF(beta)-mediated suppression of the neural crest stem cell (NCSC) transcription factor Sox10 induces a switch in
neural to mesenchymal potential in NCSCs. [Stem Cells]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Functional Effects of Adult Human Olfactory Stem Cells on Early-Onset Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Here, researchers investigate the effects of transplantation of adult human olfactory mucosa-derived stem cells on auditory function in A/J mice, a strain exhibiting early-onset progressive sensorineural hearing loss. Recent evidence indicates these stem cells exhibit multipotency in transplantation settings and may represent a subtype of mesenchymal stem cell. [Stem Cells]

The Pathology of Bleomycin Induced Fibrosis is Associated with Loss of Resident Lung Mesenchymal Stem Cells Which Regulate Effector T-Cell Proliferation
Here researchers define a population of resident lung mesenchymal stem cells that function to regulate the severity of bleomycin injury via modulation of the T-cell response. [Stem Cells]

Low Oxygen Tension Positively Influences Cardiomyocyte Progenitor Cell Function
Here, researchers show for the first time that short and long term hypoxia have different effects on human cardiomyocyte progenitor cells (hCMPCs). Short term hypoxia increased the migratory and invasive capacities of hCMPCs likely via mesenchymal transformation. [J Cell Mol Med]

Comparison of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 and Osteoactivin for Mesenchymal Cell Differentiation: Effects of Bolus and Continous Administration
In this study, researchers utilized the C3H10T1/2 murine mesenchymal stem cell line to test the hypotheses that osteoactivin (OA) has comparable osteoinductive effects to bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), and that sustained administration of either growth factor would result in increased osteoblastic differentiation as compared to bolus administration. [J Cell Physiol]

Importance of Serum Source for the In Vitro Replicative Senescence of Human Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers have examined the effect of culturing human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in autologous serum versus fetal bovine serum on factors involved in in vitro replicative senescence. [J Cell Physiol]

Osteoblasts on Rod Shaped Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles incorporated PCL Film Provide an Optimal Osteogenic Niche for Stem Cell Differentiation
In this study researchers determined 1) how the spherical or rod shaped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHA) incorporated poly( -caprolactone) (PCL) films (PCL-spherical nHA, PCL-rod nHA) interact with primary human osteoblasts; 2) how the microenvironment rendered by their interaction affects osteogenic differentiation of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Biodegradable and Biocompatible Synthetic Saccharide−Peptide Hydrogels for Three-Dimensional Stem Cell Culture
Specifically, the aims were to (1) develop a novel hydrogel platform, which could be applied for encapsulating and culturing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a 3D environment, (2) characterize the tunable properties of the hydrogel, specifically, degradation, mechanical, and gel network properties, and (3) determine the biocompatibility of the saccharide−peptide hydrogel material with MSCs. [Biomacromolecules]

Specific Age-Associated DNA Methylation Changes in Human Dermal Fibroblasts
In mesenchymal stromal cells from human bone marrow researchers have previously demonstrated age-associated methylation changes at specific CpG-sites of developmental genes. In continuation of this work, researchers have now isolated human dermal fibroblasts from young (younger than 23 years) and elderly donors (older than 60 years) for comparison of their DNA methylation profiles using the Infinium HumanMethylation27 assay. [PLoS ONE]

Safety of Intravenous Infusion of Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Animals and Humans
In the present study, the toxicity and tumorigenicity of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells were investigated for clinical application. [Stem Cells Dev]
