    TOP STORY

Dura Mater Stimulates Human Adipose-Derived Stromal to Undergo Bone Formation in Mouse Calvarial Defects
In the current study, researchers postulated that the cell:cell interaction between engrafted adipose-derived stromal cells and host dura mater cells is critical for the healing of calvarial defects. [Stem Cells]

    SCIENCE NEWS

Stem Cell Treatment May Become Option to Treat Nonhealing Bone Fractures
Stem cell therapy enriched with a bone-regenerating hormone, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), can help mend broken bones in fractures that are not healing normally, a new animal study finds. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing research presented at The Endocrine Society’s 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston]

    Heart Has Built-In Repair Mechanism
Researchers have for the first time succeeded in transforming a new type of stem-like cell in the adult heart into heart muscle in mice. [Press release from the University College London discussing online prepublication in Nature]

Signaling Pathways Point to Vulnerability in Breast Cancer Stem Cells
Researchers have identified signals from breast epithelial cells that can induce those cells to transition to and maintain a mesenchymal and stem cell-like state that imbues both normal and cancer cells with a greater ability to migrate and self-renew. [Press release from the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research discussing online prepublication in Cell]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

De Novo Cardiomyocytes from within the Activated Adult Heart After Injury
Investigators demonstrated in mice that the adult heart contains a resident stem or progenitor cell population, which has the potential to contribute bona fide terminally differentiated cardiomyocytes after myocardial infarction. [Nature]

Paracrine and Autocrine Signals Induce and Maintain Mesenchymal and Stem Cell States in the Breast
Scientists described three signaling pathways, involving transforming growth factor-β and canonical and noncanonical Wnt signaling, that collaborate to induce activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition program and thereafter function in an autocrine fashion to maintain the resulting mesenchymal state. [Cell]

Integrin-Mediated Adhesion and Proliferation of Human MSCs Elicited by a Hydroxyproline-Lacking, Collagen-Like Peptide
In this study, researchers evaluated the competence of a rationally designed collagen-like peptide (CLP-Cys) sequence – containing the minimal essential Glycine-Glutamic acid-Arginine triplet but lacking the hydroxyproline residue – for supporting human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) adhesion, spreading and proliferation. [Biomaterials]

Role of Slug Transcription Factor in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers used human mesenchymal stem cells from tibial plateau trabecular bone, iliac crest bone marrow and Wharton’s jelly umbilical cord demonstrating a variability in their mineral matrix deposition, and in the expression levels of transcription factors including Runx2, Sox9, Sox5, Sox6, STAT1 and Slug, all involved in the control of osteochondroprogenitors differentiation program. [J Cell Mol Med]

PUMILIO2 is Involved in the Positive Regulation of Cellular Proliferation in Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells
Here researchers show that PUM2 is expressed in a subpopulation of adipose-derived stem cell cultures, with a granular pattern of staining in the cytoplasm. [Stem Cells Dev]

Stem Cell Induced Cardiac Regeneration: Fusion/Mitochondrial Exchange and/or Transdifferentiation?
In this study researchers demonstrated that cells of fused human adipose tissue derived stem cell-cardiomyocytes display a cardiomyocyte phenotype and spontaneous rhythmic contraction and generate an action potential in vitro. [Cell Cycle]

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Seeding Promotes Reendothelialization of the Endovascular Stent
This study is designed to make a novel cell seeding stent and to evaluate reendothelialization and anti-restenosis after the stent implantation. [J Biomed Mater Res A]

    INDUSTRY NEWS

Results from Mesoblast’s cardiovascular clinical trials were featured at the Goldman Sachs 32nd Annual Global Healthcare Conference in California. [Mesoblast Press Release]

Cytori Reports Sustained Benefits at 18 Months in Cardiac Cell Therapy Heart Attack Trial
Cytori Therapeutics is reporting 18 month outcomes from its APOLLO trial for Acute Myocardial Infarction. [Cytori Therapeutics Press Release]
