    TOP STORY

The i Blood Group Antigen as a Marker for Umbilical Cord Blood Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers have now studied in detail the cell surface expression of the blood group i epitope (linear poly-N-acetyllactosamine chain) in
umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cells. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Cultured Cell-Derived Extracellular Matrix Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering
In this study, extracellular matrix scaffolds derived from mesenchymal stem cell, chondrocyte, and fibroblast were prepared by culturing cells in a selectively removable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) template. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Cationic Gd-DTPA Liposomes for Highly Efficient Labeling of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Cell Tracking with MRI
In the current study cell labeling was performed with water soluble Gadolinium (Gd)-DTPA containing liposomes, to allow for cell tracking by MRI. Liposomes were used to assure a highly concentrated intracellular build up of Gd, aiming to overcome the relatively low MRI sensitivity of Gd (as compared to T2 contrast agents). [Cell Transplant] Abstract

Inhibitors of Tyrosine Phosphatases and Apoptosis Reprogram Lineage-Marked Differentiated Muscle to Myogenic Progenitor Cells
Here, researchers used the Cre-Lox method to specifically label postmitotic primary multinucleated myotubes and then utilized small molecule inhibitors of tyrosine phosphatases and apoptosis to dedifferentiate these myotubes into proliferating myogenic cells, without gene overexpression. [Chem Biol] Abstract | Press Release

Maintenance of Human Embryonic Stem Cells in Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Conditioned Media Augments Hematopoietic Specification
Here, researchers hypothesized that human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) maintained in human mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned media may be more prone to differentiation towards hematopoietic lineage than hESCs grown in standard human foreskin fibroblast-conditioned media. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Intrinsic Growth Deficiencies of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)
Herein, researchers present a novel selection protocol for obtaining a standards-compliant MSC preparation. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Patterns of Amino Acid Metabolism by Proliferating Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
In this study, researchers investigated the amino acid metabolism of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), with focus on two questions: Which amino acids are consumed and/or secreted by hMSCs and at what rates? [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Forskolin Enhances In Vivo Bone Formation by Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Data shows forskolin as a novel agent that can be used to increase bone formation and also suggests a role for protein kinase A in the delicate balance between adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Transplantation Mitigates Radiation-Induced Gastrointestinal Syndrome in Mice
Researchers examined whether bone marrow-derived adherent stromal cell transplantation could restitute irradiated intestinal stem cells niche and mitigate radiation-induced gastrointestinal syndrome. [PLoS ONE] Abstract

Transcriptome Analysis of MSC and MSC-Derived Osteoblasts on Resomer® LT706 and PCL: Impact of Biomaterial Substrate on Osteogenic Differentiation
In the present study, researchers analysed two synthetic, long-term degradable polymers for their impact on mesenchymal stem cell-based bone tissue engineering: PLLA-co-TMC (Resomer® LT706) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). [PLoS ONE] Abstract

The Combination of Angiotensin II and 5-Azacytidine Promotes Cardiomyocyte Differentiation of Rat Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells
In this study, researchers investigated the effects of angiotensin II on the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells induced by 5-aza in vitro. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract
