    TOP STORY

Matrix IGF-1 Maintains Bone Mass by Activation of mTOR in Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers report that insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) released from the bone matrix during bone remodeling stimulates osteoblastic differentiation of recruited mesenchymal stem cells by activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), thus maintaining proper bone microarchitecture and mass. [Nat Med] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Restore Cortical Rewiring after Neonatal Ischemia in Mice
Researchers investigated the effect of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage and mesenchymal stem cell treatment on the structure and contralesional connectivity of motor function-related cerebral areas. [Ann Neurol] Abstract

The Effect of Diminished Osteogenic Signals on Reduced Osteoporosis Recovery in Aged Mice and the Potential Therapeutic Use of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells
Scientists explored the feasibility of using adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) as a cell-based therapeutic approach for treating osteoporosis, and examined the effects of aging on the pluoripotency of ADSCs and the efficiency of bone formation both in vitro and in vivo. [Biomaterials] Abstract

MiR-181a Regulates MSC Growth and Immune Function: MiR-181a Regulates Local Immune Balance by Inhibiting Proliferation and Immunosuppressive Properties of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Investigators evaluated if and how microRNA-181a (miR-181a) regulates mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) proliferation and immunosuppressive properties. They found that the expression of miR-181a in the MSCs derived from the umbilical cord and decidua of preeclampsia patients increased relative to MSCs derived from normal patients. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Induction of Cardiac Myogenic Lineage Development Differs between Mesenchymal and Satellite Cells and Is Accelerated by Bone Morphogenetic Protein-4
Researchers aimed to elucidate the cardiac lineage development of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and to identify cells that had the potential for cardiac myogenic differentiation when compared to skeletal muscle satellite myogenesis. [J Mol Cell Cardiol] Abstract

Comparative Study of the Biological Characteristics of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood of Rats
Scientists compared the biological characteristics between bone marrow-mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and peripheral blood-MSCs. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

BMP-6 Is More Efficient in Bone Formation than BMP-2 when Overexpressed in Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers evaluated the potential of osteogenic differentiation in porcine adipose tissue- and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in vitro and in vivo when induced by nucleofection with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) or rhBMP-6. [Gene Ther] Abstract

Over-Sulfated Chondroitin Sulfate Derivatives Induce Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Independent of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 and Transforming Growth Factor-ß1 Signaling
The influence of chondroitin sulfate (CS) and two chemically over-sulfated CS derivatives on osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stromal cells and on bone morphogenetic protein-2 and transforming growth factor ß1 signaling was investigated. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

Stemness Gene Expression Profile Analysis in Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists investigated the normal mRNA expression profile of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs), and analyzed the candidate proteins responsible for the signaling pathway that may affect the differentiation characteristics of UC-MSCs. [Exp Biol Med] Abstract
