    TOP STORY
The Role of MicroRNA-146a in the Pathogenesis of the Diabetic Wound-Healing Impairment
Researchers have previously shown that treatment of diabetic murine wounds with mesenchymal stem cells can improve healing, but the mechanisms are not completely defined. They hypothesized that abnormal microRNA-146a (miRNA-146a) expression may contribute to the chronic inflammation. To test this hypothesis, they examined the expression of miRNA-146a and its target genes in diabetic and nondiabetic mice at baseline and after injury. [Diabetes] Abstract

Silk Ionomers for Encapsulation and Differentiation of Human MSCs
Researchers studied the response of human bone marrow derived human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) encapsulated in silk ionomer hydrogels. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Nuclear FGF2 Isoforms Inhibit Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Mineralization through FGF23/FGFR/MAPK In Vitro
Scientists assessed whether high molecular weight isoforms reduced mineralized bone formation via phosphate-independent effects in bone marrow stromal cells by modulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)/FGF receptor (FGFR)/ERK signaling. [J Bone Miner Res] Abstract

Effect of an Adipose Derived Stem Cells and Nerve Growth Factor-Incorporated Hydrogel on Recovery of Erectile Function in a Rat Model of Cavernous Nerve Injury
Researchers investigated the effectiveness of human adipose derived stem cell and nerve growth factor-incorporated hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel application on the cavernous nerve in a rat model of bilateral cavernous nerve crush injury. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Radial-Flow Bioreactor Enables Uniform Proliferation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells throughout Three-Dimensional Scaffold
A radial-flow bioreactor was used to induce three-dimensional expansion of human mesenchymal stem cells on a large scaffold. The effect of this expansion on cellular characteristics was investigated. [Tissue Eng Part C Methods] Abstract

Explant Culture: A Simple, Reproducible, Efficient and Economic Technique for Isolation of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Human Adipose Tissue and Lipoaspirate
Investigators demonstrated that adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ASCs) isolated by explant culture are phenotypically and functionally equivalent to those obtained by enzymatic digestion. Further, the explant-derived ASC share the immune privileged status and immunosuppressive properties implicit to mesenchymal stromal cells, suggesting that they are competent to be tested and applied in allogeneic clinical settings. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Increased Stem Cell Factor/c-Kit by Hypoxia Promotes Autophagy of Human Placental Chorionic Plate-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells via Regulating the Phosphorylation of mTOR
Scientists compared the effect of hypoxia on the self-renewal of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and placental chorionic plate-derived MSCs and investigated the regulatory mechanisms of self-renewal in each MSC type during hypoxia. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Acidic pH Conditions Mimicking Degenerative Intervertebral Discs Impair the Survival and Biological Behavior of Human Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers examined the survival and biological behavior of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells under an intervertebral disc-like acidic environment. [Exp Biol Med] Abstract

Mineral Trioxide Aggregate-Enriched Nanocomposite TiO2-Polymeric Powder Coatings Support Human Mesenchymal Cell Attachment and Growth
Researchers found the novel polymer/ceramic nanocomposites that were created with ultrafine powder coating technology were continuous, homogenous and nano-rough coatings that enhanced human mesenchymal cell attachment and growth. [Biomed Mater] Abstract

    SCIENCE NEWS

Adult Stem Cells from Liposuction Used to Create Blood Vessels in the Lab
Adult stem cells derived from fat were turned into smooth muscle cells in the laboratory, and then “seeded” onto a very thin collagen membrane. As the stem cells multiplied, the researchers rolled them into tubes matching the diameter of small blood vessels. In three to four weeks, they grew into usable blood vessels. Rheumatoid Arthritis New Major Clinical Target after Mesoblast Obtains Positive Results in Inflammatory Arthritis
Mesoblast Limited announced positive results in a large animal model of rheumatoid arthritis following a single intravenous injection of its proprietary allogeneic immunomodulatory adult mesenchymal precursor cells. [Mesoblast Limited] Press Release
