    Human Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cells (hMSCs) Cultured as Spheroids Are Self-Activated to Produce Prostaglandin E2 (PEG2) that Directs Stimulated Macrophages into an Anti-Inflammatory Phenotype
    Scientists explored the effects of hMSC spheroids on macrophages. Results indicated that hMSCs in three-dimensional-spheroid cultures are self-activated, in part by intracellular stress responses, to produce PGE2 that can change stimulated macrophages from a primarily pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to a more anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype.     Researchers demonstrated a new role for Snail1 in transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) response and mesenchymal stem cell maintenance. [Oncogene] Abstract

    Mesenchymal Stem Cells as a Novel Carrier for Targeted-Delivery of Gene in Cancer Therapy Based on Non-Viral Transfection
    Scientists showed the effectiveness of non-viral vectors in transferring the therapeutic gene to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and the feasible of using MSCs as a targeted gene delivery carrier, indicating that MSCs could be a promising tumor target delivery vehicle in cancer gene therapy based on non-viral gene recombination.     Microvesicles Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Stimulated by Hypoxia Promote Angiogenesis Both In Vitro and In Vivo
    Results indicate that membrane microvesicle releasing is one of the major mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of mesenchymal stem cell therapy by promoting angiogenesis. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

    Conditioned Mesenchymal Stem Cells Attenuate Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease through Inhibition of Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition and Immune Modulation
    Mesenchymal stem cells were cultured in media containing various concentrations of basic fibroblast growth factor, epidermal growth factor and ascorbic acid 2-phosphate to investigate whether hepatocyte growth factor secretion could be increased by the stimulation of these growth factors.     Activation of Toll-Like Receptor 3 (TLR3) Amplifies Mesenchymal Stem Cell Trophic Factors and Enhances Therapeutic Potency
    Using the RNA mimetic polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [poly(I:C)] to engage mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) TLR3, researchers found that poly(I:C), signaling through multiple mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways, induced therapeutically relevant trophic factors such as interleukin-6-type cytokines, stromal-derived factor 1, hepatocyte growth factor, and vascular endothelial growth factor while slightly inhibiting the proliferation and migration potentials of MSCs.     Differential Effects of Mixed Lymphocyte Reaction Supernatant on Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
