    TOP STORY
Intravenous Mesenchymal Stem Cells Prevented Rejection of Allogeneic Corneal Transplants by Aborting the Early Inflammatory Response
Researchers used a mouse model of corneal allo-transplantation and demonstrated that peri-transplant intravenous infusion of human mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells decreased the early surgically induced inflammation and reduced the activation of antigen-presenting cells in the cornea and draining lymph nodes. Subsequently, immune rejection was decreased, and allograft survival was prolonged. [Mol Ther] Abstract

The Isolation and Differentiation of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Using Membrane Filtration
Human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) were purified from a suspension of human adipose tissue cells by the conventional culture method and by membrane filtration through polyurethane (PU) foam membranes. Results suggested that the hADSCs with the capability for osteogenic differentiation adhered to the PU membranes. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Functional Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells Derived from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells via Mesenchymal Stem Cell Intermediates
Scientists developed an efficient stage-wise strategy that enabled human induced pluripotent stem cells differentiation into contractile smooth muscle cells through an intermediate population of clonogenic and multipotent mesenchymal stem cells. [Cardiovasc Res] Abstract

Transplantation of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Is Associated with Neural Differentiation and Functional Improvement in a Rat Model of Intracerebral Hemorrhage
Researchers examined whether transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells induces neural differentiation and improves neural function in a rat intracerebral hemorrhage model. [CNS Neurosci Ther] Abstract

Investigating the Role of FGF18 in the Cultivation and Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists constructed fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18) and investigated its effects on rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs). The proliferative effects of FGF18 on rBMSCs were examined using an MTS assay. To validate the osteogenic differentiation effects of FGF18, ALP and mineralization activity were examined as well as osteogenic differentiation-related gene levels. [PLoS One] Full Article

HGF and Direct Mesenchymal Stem Cells Contact Synergize to Inhibit Hepatic Stellate Cells Activation through TLR4/NF-kB Pathway
Apart from the paracrine mechanism by which the anti-fibrotic effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) inhibit activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), the effects of direct interplay and juxtacrine signaling between the two cell types are poorly understood. Researchers explored the underlying mechanisms by which BMSCs modulate the function of activated HSCs. [PLoS One] Full Article

Human Serum Is a Suitable Supplement for the Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Seeded on Poly-3-Hydroxibutyrate-co-3-Hydroxyvalerate Scaffolds
Researchers evaluated the osteogenic differentiation process of human adipose-derived stem cells in poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate scaffolds with osteogenic medium supplemented with pooled allogeneic human serum. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Modular Polylactic Acid Microparticle-Based Scaffolds Prepared via Microfluidic Emulsion/Solvent Displacement Process: Fabrication, Characterization, and In Vitro Mesenchymal Stem Cells Interaction Study
Investigators reported a novel approach for the design and fabrication of polylactic acid microparticle-based scaffolds with microstructural properties suitable for bone and cartilage regeneration. The biological response of the scaffolds was assessed in vitro by using bone marrow-derived rat mesenchymal stem cells. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract
