Injury-Activated Transforming Growth Factor β Controls Mobilization of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Tissue Remodeling
Using several animal models in which latent transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) is activated in the vascular matrix in response to injury of arteries, investigators showed that active TGFβ controls the mobilization and recruitment of mesenchymal stem cells to participate in tissue repair and remodeling. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Demethylation of Epiregulin Gene by Histone Demethylase FBXL11 and BCL6 Corepressor Inhibits Osteo/Dentinogenic Differentiation
Scientists investigated FBXL11, a lysine-specific 2A histone demethylase, which is evolutionarily conserved, ubiquitously expressed, and a member of the JmjC-domain-containing histone demethylase family. They found that FBXL11 regulated osteo/dentinogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Cardiac Progenitors Derived from Reprogrammed Mesenchymal Stem Cells Contribute to Angiomyogenic Repair of the Infarcted Heart
Researchers reported efficient reprogramming of multipotent bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to pluripotent status. The resultant MSC derived induced pluripotent stem cells and their derived progenitors effectively repaired the infarcted heart. [Basic Res Cardiol] AbstractFull Article

TNF-α Suppresses the Mesenchymal Stem Cell Osteogenesis Promoter miR-21 in Estrogen Deficiency-Induced Osteoporosis
Investigators identified a novel mechanism that TNF-α suppressing the functional axis of a key microRNA(miR)-21 contributes to estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis. miR-21 was significantly down-regulated in mesenchymal stem cells derived from estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis. [J Bone Miner Res] Abstract

Control of 3D Substrate Stiffness to Manipulate Mesenchymal Stem Cell Fate toward Neuronal or Glial Lineages
Researchers investigated the change of matrix stiffness on the influence of neurogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

Juxtacrine and Paracrine Interactions of Rat Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Muscle Derived Satellite Cells and Neonatal Cardiomyocytes with Endothelial Cells in Angiogenesis Dynamics
Scientists investigated the juxtacrine and paracrine interaction between three different cells, namely rat marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells, rat muscle-derived satellite cells and rat neonatal cardiomyocytes, and endothelial cells during the angiogenesis process. [Stem Cell Dev] Abstract

MSM Enhances GH Signaling via the Jak2/STAT5b Pathway in Osteoblast-Like Cells and Osteoblast Differentiation through the Activation of STAT5b in MSCs
Researchers investigated the effects of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on the growth hormone (GH) signaling via the Janus kinase (Jak)/signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) pathway in osteoblasts and the differentiation of primary bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). [PLoS One] Full Article

Combination Treatment of Hypothermia and Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Amplifies Neuroprotection in Primary Rat Neurons Exposed to Hypoxic-Ischemic-Like Injury In Vitro: Role of the Opioid System
Scientists designed a study to reveal the therapeutic regimen and mechanism of action underlying hypothermia treatment in combination with stem cell transplantation for ameliorating neonatal hypoxic-ischemic-like injury. [PLoS One] Full Article

Comparative Analysis of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Adult Mouse Adipose, Muscle, and Fetal Muscle
Investigators focused on the differences of mesenchymal stem cells from adult adipose, skeletal muscle and fetal muscle in biological characteristics, which is the key to cell therapy success. [Mol Biol Rep]

In Vitro Chondrogenesis by BMP6 Gene Therapy
The promotion of in vitro chondrogenesis was investigated by using chitosan scaffolds and rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells which are transfected by BMP6 (bone morphogenetic protein-6) encoding gene. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Is CD34 Truly a Negative Marker for Mesenchymal Stromal Cells?
The prevailing school of thought is that mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) do not express CD34, and this sets MSC apart from hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), which do express CD34. However, the evidence for MSC being CD34 is largely based on cultured MSC, not tissue-resident MSC, and the existence of CD34 HSC is in fact well documented. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Cell Sources for the Regeneration of Articular Cartilage: The Past, the Horizon and the Future
The author discusses the cell sources which are currently being investigated for the generation of chondrogenic cells. Autologous chondrocyte implantation using chondrocytes expanded ex vivo was the first chondrogenic cellular therapy to be used clinically. Limitations in expansion potential have led to the investigation of adult mesenchymal stem cells as an alternative cell source and these therapies are beginning to enter clinical trials. [Int J Exp Pathol] Abstract
