    TOP STORY
Preactivation of Human MSCs with TNF-α Enhances Tumor-Suppressive Activity
Scientists showed that weekly infusions into mice of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) preactivated with TNF-α inhibited the progression of lung tumors formed from MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. [Cell Stem Cell] Abstract | Graphical Abstract

Bone Marrow-Mesenchymal Stem Cells Are a Major Source of Interleukin-7 and Sustain Colitis by Forming the Niche for Colitogenic CD4 Memory T Cells
Researchers demonstrated that bone marrow (BM) mesenchymal stem cells are a major source of interleukin-7 and play a pathological role in inflammatory bowel disease by forming the niche for colitogenic CD4 memory T cells in BM. [Gut] Abstract

Cell Surface Structures Influence Lung Clearance Rate of Systemically Infused Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Investigators found a striking difference in the lung clearance rate of systemically infused mesenchymal stromal/stem cell derived from two different clinical sources, namely bone marrow and umbilical cord blood. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Electrospun Biomimetic Scaffold of Hydroxyapatite/Chitosan Supports Enhanced Osteogenic Differentiation of mMSCs
Biomimetic composite nanofibrous scaffolds of hydroxyapatite/chitosan were prepared to investigate their capacity for inducing murine mesenchymal stem cells (mMSCs) to differentiate into the osteogenic lineage, in the absence and presence of an osteogenic supplementation, respectively. [Nanotechnology] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Patients to Assay Bone Graft Substitutes
Non-stoichiometric Mg2+ ions and stoichiometric apatites, which are used in orthopedic surgery as bone substitutes, have been assayed in vitro with human adult mesenchymal stem cells to evaluate cytocompatibility and osteoconductivity. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

Differentiation within Autologous Fibrin Scaffolds of Porcine Dermal Cells with the Mesenchymal Stem Cell Phenotype
Researchers attempted to characterize the mesenchymal stem cell phenotype of porcine dermal cells and to evaluate their cellular proliferation and differentiation in autologous fibrin scaffolds. [Exp Cell Res] Abstract

Human Adipose CD34+ CD90+ Stem Cells and Collagen Scaffold Constructs Grafted In Vivo Fabricate Loose Connective and Adipose Tissues
Scientists examined mesenchymal stem cells co-expressing CD34 and CD90 from adipose tissue. This stem cell population displayed higher proliferative capacity than CD34 CD90 cells and was able to differentiate in vitro into adipocytes (PPARγ+ and adiponectin+) and endothelial cells (CD31+ VEGF+ Flk1+). [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Long Term Reparative Effects of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy following Neonatal Hyperoxia-Induced Lung Injury
Researchers evaluated whether the long term reparative effects of a single intra-tracheal dose of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or MSC-conditioned medium are comparable in established hyperoxia-induced lung injury. [Pediatr Res] AbstractFull Article

Growth and Osteogenic Differentiation of Alveolar Human Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Chitosan/Hydroxyapatite Composite Fabric
Biological in vitro evaluations showed that human mesenchymal stem cells cultured on chitosan (CS)/hydroxyapatite fabric showed increased proliferation compared to those cultured on pure CS fabric, which was observed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, DNA content assay, and [3H] thymidine incorporation assay. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Effects of Rehmannia Glutinosa Oligosaccharide on Human Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Vitro
Scientists evaluated the influence of Rehmannia glutinosa Oligosaccharide, a traditional Chinese medicine, on the proliferation of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells, H2O2-induced apoptosis, and secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor and hepatocyte growth factor in vitro. [Life Sci] Abstract

Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Induces the Aging of Mesenchymal Stem Cells through Promoting ROS Production
Researchers report that the Wnt/β-catenin signaling was a potent activator of reactive oxygen species generation in mesenchymal stem cells. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Treatment for MS – Progress to Date
An exhaustive amount of preclinical data has shown that the intravenous administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) effectively ameliorates experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a model of multiple sclerosis (MS), through the release of anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective molecules. Based on these results, several small pilot clinical trials in subjects with advanced MS have demonstrated that MSC administration is safe and provided an early signal of clinical effectiveness. [Mult Scler] Abstract

Tissue Regeneration at Heart of New Institute
The emerging field of tissue regeneration, which harnesses the power and healing potential of stem cells, is an area to which scientists around the world are turning their attention. One of the foremost leaders in this area, Mark Sussman from San Diego State University (SDSU), announced the opening of SDSU’s new Integrated Regenerative Research Institute to help advance this area of research in San Diego.
