    TOP STORY
The Notch Pathway Controls Fibrotic and Regenerative Repair in the Adult Heart
The role of Notch in the mesenchymal stromal cell fraction, which contains cardiac fibroblasts and cardiac precursor cells, is largely unknown. Scientists evaluated whether forced activation of the Notch pathway in mesenchymal stromal cells regulates pathological cardiac remodeling. [Eur Heart J] Full Article

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

EphB4 Enhances the Process of Endochondral Ossification and Inhibits Remodeling during Bone Fracture Repair
Researchers examined the role of EphB4 during bone repair following traumatic injury. They performed femoral fractures with internal fixation in transgenic mice that over express EphB4 under the collagen type 1 promoter, and investigated the bone repair process up to 12 weeks post fracture. [J Bone Miner Res] Abstract

A Placebo-Controlled Randomized Trial of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Investigators aimed to assess safety and to perform initial evaluation of potential efficacy of systemic mesenchymal stem cells administration to patients with moderate-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. [Chest] Abstract

    Notch1 Modulates MSC-Mediated Regulatory T Cell Induction
The authors investigated the molecular mechanism underlying mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) induction of human regulatory T cells. They showed that the Notch1 pathway is activated in CD4+ T cells co-cultured with MSCs. [Eur J Immunol] Abstract

Differential Secretome Analysis of Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts and Bone Marrow-Derived Precursors to Identify Microenvironmental Regulators of Colon Cancer Progression
Scientists aimed to identify cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF)-derived regulators of colon cancer progression by performing a high-throughput differential secretome profiling between CAF compared to non cancer-activated bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [Proteomics] Abstract

Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Promote Vascular Growth In Vivo
Researchers examined the acquisition of properties associated with vascular growth by human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells, and whether they promoted vascular growth in vivo. [PLoS One]

Impact of Passing Mesenchymal Stem Cells through Smaller Bore Size Needles for Subsequent Use in Patients for Clinical or Cosmetic Indications
The authors aimed to investigate the smallest possible bore size needle which will support the safe delivery of mesenchymal stem cells into various tissues for different clinical or cosmetic applications. [J Transl Med] Abstract | Full Article

A Mixed Co-Culture of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Transgenic Chondrocytes in Alginate Hydrogel for Cartilage Tissue Engineering
To regenerate articular cartilage tissue from degeneration and trauma, synovial mesenchymal stem cells were used as therapeutic progenitor cells to induce therapeutic chondrogenesis. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Transient Serum Exposure Regimes to Support Dual Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
In order to define conditions which could be compatible with both chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation in a single bioreactor, scientists analyzed the efficiency of new biphasic differentiation regimes based on transient serum exposure followed by serum-free treatment. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

From Cytogenomic to Epigenomic Profiles: Monitoring the Biological Behavior of In Vitro Cultured Human Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers monitored the chromosomal status, the biological behavior and the senescence state of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells derived from eight healthy donors at different passages during in vitro propagation. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Abstract | Full Article

Protein Kinase B/AKT Isoform 2 Drives Migration of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The authors investigated the migratory behavior of adult human mesenchymal stem cells  and the underlying mechanism. Cell migration was assessed by transwell, wound healing and time-lapse in vivo motility assays. [Int J Oncol] Abstract

    REVIEWS

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells: Radio-Resistant Members of the Bone Marrow
The authors discuss in detail the emerging importance of the DNA damage response (DDR) in mediating mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) radio-resistance and examine the DDR of MSCs in the context of other stem cell types. [Immunol Cell Biol] Abstract
