Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Dopaminergic Neurons Function in Parkinsonian Macaques
Scientists showed that autologous engraftment of A9 dopaminergic neuron-like cells induced from mesenchymal stem cells leads to long-term survival of the cells and restoration of motor function in hemiparkinsonian macaques. [J Clin Invest] Full Article | Press Release

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

Complete Regression of Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma by Multiple Injections of Engineered Mesenchymal Stem Cells Expressing Dodecameric TRAIL and HSV-TK
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were engineered to coexpress dodecameric TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand and herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (MSC/dTRAIL-TK). The antitumor effects of MSCs expressing dTRAIL or HSV-TK alone and MSC/dTRAIL-TK were compared on murine renal cell carcinoma cells using in vitro co-culture system and in vivo experimental lung metastasis model. [Clin Cancer Res] Abstract

High Levels of EphrinB2 Over-Expression Increases the Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Promotes Enhanced Cell Mediated Mineralization in a Polyethyleneimine-EphrinB2 Gene-Activated Matrix
The use of polyethyleneimine to transfect human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) with ephrinB2 was assessed. Recently a role for the ephrinB2 ligand and EphB4 receptor duo has been proposed in bone remodeling. Over-expression of the ephrinB2 ligand resulted in increased osteogenic differentiation in hMSCs. [J Control Release] Abstract

Long-Term Functional Engraftment of Mesenchymal Progenitor Cells in a Mouse Model of Accelerated Aging
To investigate the role of mesenchymal progenitor cell aging as a cell-autonomous mechanism in senile bone loss, transplantation of young wild-type whole bone marrow into Wrn−/−Terc−/− mutants was performed and the ability of engrafted cells to differentiate into cells of the osteoblast lineage was assessed. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Sulfated Hyaluronan Containing Collagen Matrices Enhance Cell-Matrix-Interaction, Endocytosis, and Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
The authors applied quantitative proteomics to investigate the influence of artificial extracellular matrix composed of collagen type I and hyaluronan or sulfated hyaluronan on the molecular adaptation of osteogenic-differentiated human mesenchymal stromal cells. [J Proteome Res] Abstract

Systemic Administration of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (hASCs) Reverts Nociceptive Hypersensitivity in an Experimental Model of Neuropathy
Scientists investigated the effect of hASCs injected in a model of neuropathic pain (mouse sciatic nerve chronic constriction injury). hASCs from five donors were characterized, and no major differences were depicted. [Stem Cell Dev] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Overexpressing CXCR4 Improve Early Liver Regeneration of Small-for-Size Liver Grafts
The authors investigated whether CXCR4-mesenchymal stem cell infusion protects hepatocytes and stimulates regeneration in 50% reduced-size liver transplantation. [Liver Transplant] Abstract

Polyphenols Suppress Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Oxidative Stress in Human Bone-Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists carried out a systematic analysis of the effects of polyphenols on human mesenchymal stem cell in their response to oxidative stress in the form of treatment with H2O2 and nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine, respectively. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Gefitinib Inhibits the Cross-Talk between Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Prostate Cancer Cells Leading to Tumor Cell Proliferation and Inhibition of Docetaxel Activity
Investigators showed that treatment of human primary mesenchymal stem cells with conditioned medium derived from the bone metastatic PC3 carcinoma cells resulted in a significant activation of epidermal growth factor receptor, increased proliferation, increased osteoblastic but decreased adipocitic differentiation, inhibition of senescence induced by serum starvation and increased CCL5 secretion. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Chondrogenic Differentiation of Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells via Biomimetic and Bioactive Poly-ε-Caprolactone Scaffolds
The authors aimed to develop a scaffold for mesenchymal stromal cell recruitment, proliferation, and chondrogenic differentiation. [J Biomed Mater Res] Abstract

Transplantation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in ALS
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) might be suitable for cell therapy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) because of their immunomodulatory and protective properties. In this review, the authors discuss the major challenges to the translation of in vitro and animal studies of MSCs therapy in the clinical setting. [Prog Brain Res] Abstract
