    TOP STORY
CXCL12 in Early Mesenchymal Progenitors Is Required for Hematopoietic Stem-Cell Maintenance
Scientists selectively deleted Cxcl12 from candidate niche stromal cell populations and characterized the effect on hematopoietic progenitor cells. Deletion of Cxcl12 from mineralizing osteoblasts had no effect on hematopoietic stem cells or lymphoid progenitors. [Nature] Abstract | Press Release

Cotransplantation with Specific Populations of Spina Bifida Bone Marrow Stem/Progenitor Cells Enhances Urinary Bladder Regeneration
Researchers demonstrated the role of two specific populations of bone marrow stem/progenitor cells used in combination with a synthetic elastomeric scaffold that provides a unique and alternative means to current bladder regeneration approaches. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract | Press Release

Metabolic Rescue of Obese Adipose-Derived Stems Cells by Lin28/Let7 Pathway
The authors evaluated whether adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) isolated from non-obese and obese tissue differed in their metabolic characteristics and differentiation potential. During differentiation to mature adipocytes, both mouse and human ASCs derived from non-obese tissues increased their insulin sensitivity and inhibition of lipolysis while obese-derived ASCs were insulin-resistant, showing impaired insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and resistance to the antilipolytic effect of insulin. [Diabetes] Abstract

Topical Administration of Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stem Cells Seeded in a Collagen Scaffold Augments Wound Healing and Increases Angiogenesis in the Diabetic Rabbit Ulcer
Investigators hypothesized that topically applied allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) would improve wound healing by augmenting angiogenesis. Allogeneic non-diabetic bone-marrow derived MSCs were seeded in a collagen scaffold. The cells were applied to a full thickness cutaneous wound in the alloxan-induced diabetic rabbit ear ulcer model in a dose escalation fashion. [Diabetes] Abstract

Delivery of Soluble TRAIL Variants by MSCs in Combination with Cytotoxic Drug Treatment Leads to p53-Independent Enhanced Antitumor Effects
The authors engineered murine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to express a secreted form of the TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), which is a potent inducer of apoptosis in tumor cells, and tested these MSCs. [Cell Death Dis] Abstract

The Effects of Hedgehog on the RNA-Binding Protein Msi1 in the Proliferation and Apoptosis of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers evaluated the direct effects of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling on the proliferation and apoptosis of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells as well as investigated potential downstream regulatory mechanisms that may be responsible for Hh signaling. [PLoS One] Full Article

In Vitro Characterization of Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Isolated from Palatal Subepithelial Tissue Grafts
Investigators analyzed whether the mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) isolated from palatal tissue grafts harvested in order to cover gingival recessions have the basic characteristics of stem cells. [Microsc Microanal] Abstract

Retrovirus-Mediated Transduction of a Cytosine Deaminase Gene Preserves the Stemness of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists assessed whether transduction with a retroviral vector encoding cytosine deaminase gene altered the stem cell property of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs were transduced at passage 1 and cultivated up to passage 11. They found that proliferation and differentiation potentials, chromosomal stability and surface antigenicity of MSCs were not altered by retroviral transduction. [Exp Mol Med]

The Effect of ATM Kinase Inhibition on the Initial Response of HUMAN Dental Pulp and Periodontal Ligament Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Ionizing Radiation
Researchers evaluated early changes in human mesenchymal stem cells isolated from dental pulp and periodontal ligament after γ-irradiation and the effect of ATM inhibition. [Int J Radiat Biol] Abstract

Cryopreservation of Alginate Encapsulated Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
The authors investigated the response of mesenchymal stromal cells encapsulated in alginate microspheres to different cryopreservation protocols. [Cryobiology] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells: A Promising Therapy for the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Preclinical models of Acute respiratory distress syndrome have demonstrated that intratracheal or systemic administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) protects the lung against injury. The mechanisms responsible for the protective effects are multiple, including the secretion of multiple paracrine factors capable of modulating the immune response and restoring epithelial and endothelial integrity. [Respiration] Abstract
