Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cells Reduce Colitis in Mice by Activating NOD2 Signaling to COX2
Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2 (NOD2) regulates intestinal inflammation, and is also expressed by human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), to regulate their differentiation. Researchers investigated whether NOD2 is required for the anti-inflammatory activities of MSCs in mice with colitis. [Gastroenterology] Abstract

Clonal Analysis of Multipotent Stromal Cells Derived from CD271+ Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cells: Functional Heterogeneity and Different Mechanisms of Allosuppression
There are no reports presenting a clonal analysis of the proliferative potential, differentiation potential and allosuppressive effects of human mesenchymal stromal cell subsets. In this study, scientists performed a clonal analysis of mesenchymal stromal cells generated from human CD271+ bone marrow mononuclear cells. [Haematol] Abstract

The Delayed Addition of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Pre-Formed Endothelial Cell Networks Results in Functional Vascularization of a Collagen-Glycosaminoglycan Scaffold In Vivo
The authors demonstrated a method to engineer, in vitro, a nascent microvasculature within a collagen-glycosaminoglycan scaffold with a view to overcoming the major issue of graft failure due to avascular necrosis of tissue-engineered constructs. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were cultured alone and in various co-culture combinations with human mesenchymal stem cells to determine their vasculogenic abilities in vitro. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

3D Scaffolds Co-Seeded with Human Endothelial Progenitor and Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Evidence of Prevascularization within 7 Days
Researchers developed an in vitro pre-vascularized construct using 3D polyurethane scaffolds, based on the association of human endothelial progenitor cells with human mesenchymal stem cells. [Eur Cell Mater] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Survival in the Infarcted Heart Is Enhanced by Lentivirus Vector-Mediated Hsp27 Expression
Hsp27 over-expression by lentivirus vector modification resulted in increased mesenchymal stem cell survival in vitro and in vivo. [Hum Gene Ther] Abstract

Isolation and Characterization of a Novel Strain of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Mouse Umbilical Cord: Potential Application in Cell-Based Therapy
A novel strain of murine mesenchymal stem cells derived from the umbilical cord of wild-type and green fluorescent protein transgenic mice was successfully isolated, expanded, and characterized. [PLoS One]

Impact of Bacteria and Bacterial Components on Osteogenic and Adipogenic Differentiation of Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists investigated the impact of three different wound infection relevant bacteria, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes, and the cell wall components lipopolysaccharide and lipoteichoic acid on viability, proliferation, and osteogenic as well as adipogenic differentiation of human adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells. [Exp Cell Res] Abstract

Inhibition of Histone Deacetylases Potentiates BMP9-Induced Osteogenic Signaling in Mouse Mesenchymal Stem Cells
It is known that epigenetic regulations play an important role in regulating the stem cell potency and lineage commitment. Scientists investigated if the inhibition of histone deacetylases affects bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9)-induced osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). [Cell Physiol Biochem] Abstract

Lipopolysaccharides Shapes the Human Wharton’s Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Vitro
The expression and role of toll-like receptor 4 in human Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hWJ-MSCs) was investigated using a model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Proliferation, apoptosis, and the expression of paracrine factors in hWJ-MSCs primed with LPS were analyzed. [Cell Physiol Biochem] Abstract

Intramyocardial Injection of Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived Ex Vivo Expanded Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients Is Feasible and Safe up to 5 Years of Follow-Up
Researchers evaluated the safety and feasibility of intramyocardial mesenchymal stem cell injection in nine patients, shortly after acute myocardial infarction during short-term and five-year follow-up. [J Cardiovasc Transl] Abstract | Full Article

In Vitro Evaluation of Bioactive Strontium-Based Ceramic with Rabbit Adipose-Derived Stem Cells for Bone Tissue Regeneration
A bone tissue engineering approach with radiopaque bioactive strontium incorporated calcium phosphate was proposed for preliminary cytocompatibility studies for bone substitutes. Accumulating evidence indicates that strontium containing biomaterials promote enhanced bone repair and radiopacity for easy imaging. Hence, strontium calcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite scaffolds were investigated for their ability to support and sustain the growth of rabbit adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. [J Mater Sci Mater Med] Abstract
