    TOP STORY
Characterization of Mesenchymal Progenitor Cell Populations Directly Derived from Human Dermis
To identify mesenchymal stem cell/progenitor cell populations in human dermis scientists developed an 11-marker flow cytometry technique that enabled sorting of mesenchymal cell populations for functional assays, using adipose-derived stem cells from human adipose tissue as a positive control. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Mesenchymal Stem Cell Secreted Platelet Derived Growth Factor Exerts a Pro-Migratory Effect on Resident Cardiac Atrial Appendage Stem Cells
The authors aimed to test the pro-migratory effect of mesenchymal stem cell conditioned medium on endogenous cardiac stem cells from human cardiac tissue. [J Mol Cell Cardiol] Abstract

Treatment of Graft versus Host Disease with Mesenchymal Stromal Cells: A Phase I Study on 40 Adult and Pediatric Patients
This Phase I multicenter study aimed at assess the feasibility and safety of intravenous administration of third party-bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells expanded in platelet lysate in 40 patients, experiencing steroid-resistant grade II-IV graft versus host disease. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Mechano Growth Factor E Peptide Regulates Migration and Differentiation of BMSCs
Scientists investigated on the effects of mechano growth factor (MGF) E peptide on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Their results revealed that cells treated with MGF E peptide didn’t affect proliferation. [J Mol Endocrinol] Abstract

Novel Therapy for Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: Infusion of In Vitro-Generated Insulin-Secreting Cells
Researchers present their experience of treating insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus with co-infusion of in vitro autologous adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells-differentiated insulin-secreting cells with hematopoietic stem cells. [Clin Exp Med] Abstract

Cytocompatibility Evaluation of Different Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys with Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Eight different magnesium alloys containing varying amounts of Al, Zn, Nd and Y were either incubated directly or indirectly with the osteosarcoma cell line Saos-2 or with uninduced and osteogenically-induced human mesenchymal stem cells isolated from bone marrow specimens obtained from the femoral shaft of patients undergoing total hip replacement. [J Mater Sci Mater Med] Abstract

Pre- and Postnatal Transplantation of Fetal Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Two-Center Experience
Investigators report the clinical course of two patients with osteogenesis imperfecta who received prenatal human fetal mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) transplantation and postnatal boosting with same-donor MSCs. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract | Press Release

Sox2 Suppression by miR-21 Governs Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Properties
Scientists analyzed the microRNA (miRNA) profile of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from amniotic fluid, bone marrow, and umbilical cord blood. They initially identified 67 different miRNAs that were expressed in all three types of MSCs but at different levels, depending on the source. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Ischemic Preconditioning for Cell-Based Therapy and Tissue Engineering
The authors discuss the current development of hypoxic/ischemic preconditioning to enhance stem cell-based cardiac repair and regeneration. [Pharmacol Ther] Abstract

Activity of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Therapies for Chronic Skin Wound Healing
The authors outline several mechanisms by which mesenchymal stem cells can improve healing outcomes in these cases, including reducing tissue inflammation, inducing angiogenesis in the wound bed, and reducing scarring following the repair process. [Organogenesis] Abstract
