    TOP STORY
Foxc1 Is a Critical Regulator of Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cell Niche Formation
Researchers found that when Foxc1 was deleted in all marrow mesenchymal cells or CXC chemokine ligand 12-abundant reticular (CAR) cells, from embryogenesis onwards, osteoblasts appeared normal, but hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells were markedly reduced and marrow cavities were occupied by adipocytes (yellow adipose marrow) with reduced CAR cells. [Nature] Abstract
Technical Bulletin: Assays For Cord Blood

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Regulation of MKL1 via Actin Cytoskeleton Dynamics Drives Adipocyte Differentiation
The authors showed that regulation of the transcriptional coactivator MKL1 (megakaryoblastic leukemia 1) by actin cytoskeleton dynamics drives adipocyte differentiation mediated by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, a master transcriptional regulator of adipogenesis. [Nat Commun] Abstract | Press Release

Hypoxia Enhances the Radio-Resistance of Mouse Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Hypoxia was found to increase mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) proliferation rate and colony size, increase long-term survival post irradiation and improve MSC recovery from radiation-induced cell cycle arrest. [Stem Cells] Abstract

ISL1 Overexpression in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Promotes Vascularization through Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-3
Researchers investigated whether forced expression of LIM-homeobox transcription factor islet-1 (ISL1) in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) influenced the differentiation capacity and angiogenic properties of hMSCs. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Age-Related Decreases of Serum-Response Factor Levels in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Are Involved in Skeletal Muscle Differentiation and Engraftment Capacity
Investigators asked whether human sources of developmentally early-stage mesenchymal stem cells isolated from embryonic stem cells, fetal bone, and term placenta could be cellular sources for skeletal muscle repair. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

In Vivo Bioluminescent Tracking of Mesenchymal Stem Cells within Large Hydrogel Constructs
Luciferase-expressing human mesenchymal stem cells were delivered subcutaneously within agarose and RGD-functionalized alginate hydrogel vehicles to investigate the impact of construct composition and tissue formation on bioluminescent imaging signal. [Tissue Eng Part C Methods] Abstract

Nanotopographic Substrates of Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) Do Not Strongly Influence the Osteogenic Phenotype of Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Vitro
The authors used thin film substrates of poly(methyl methacrylate) with nanoscale gratings to investigate the influence of nanotopography on the osteogenic phenotype of mesenchymal stem cells, focusing in particular on their ability to produce mineral similar to native bone. [PLoS One] Full Article

Evidences for the Involvement of Cell Surface Glycans in Stem Cell Pluripotency and Differentiation
Scientists characterized the surface glycans of induced pluripotent stem cells generated from menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal cells (iPS-MBMC) and demonstrated upon spontaneous differentiation, iPS-MBMC present high amounts of terminal β-galactopyranoside residues, pointing to an important role of terminal-linked sialic acids in pluripotency maintenance. [Glycobiology] Abstract

Serum-Free Media and the Immunoregulatory Properties of Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Vivo and In Vitro
Immunosuppressive activity and the immunomodulatory cytokines produced by mesenchymal stem cells in serum-free media were characterized in vitro. Immunomodulation by serum-free mesenchymal stem cell expansion in monocrotaline-induced pulmonary hypertension was explored in vivo. [Cell Physiol Biochem]

Proteomic Analysis on Effectors Involved in BMP-2-Induced Osteogenic Differentiation of Beagle Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The authors identified the protein regulation profile of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2)-induced osteogenic differentiation in beagle bone marrow stem cells. [Proteome Sci] Abstract | Full Article

Effect and Mechanisms of Human Wharton’s Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Type 1 Diabetes in NOD Model
Sixty NOD mice were divided into four groups, including normal control group, Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) prevention group (before onset), WJ-MSCs treatment group (after onset), and diabetic control group. [Endocrine] Abstract

    REVIEWS
The Surface Markers and Identity of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The authors revisit the reported expression of surface molecules in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from various sources, aiming to assess their potential as MSC markers and define the critical panel for future investigation. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Therapeutic Application of Adipose Derived Stem Cells in Acute Myocardial Infarction: Lessons from Animal Models
The authors compared all animal studies in which adipose derived stem cells (ASC) were used as a therapy post-myocardial infarction and have focused on aspects that might be important for future successful clinical application of ASC. [Stem Cell Rev] Abstract

Therapeutic Applications of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Relevant techniques for applying mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are discussed, focusing in particular on delivery route and cell source. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Abstract

Cancer Gene Therapy Using Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The authors review both the potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as cellular vehicles for targeted cancer therapy and the molecular mechanisms underlying MSC accumulation at tumor sites. [Int J Hematol] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS
Researcher Receives Grant to Study Stem Cell Death in Lupus Patients
Scattered throughout the bone marrow of lupus patients are dead cells that impair the crucial process of forming red blood cells. A researcher at the University of Florida has received a three-year, $300,000 grant from the Lupus Research Institute to study this phenomenon using new modeling technology. [University of Florida]
