    TOP STORY
24R,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 Promotes the Osteoblastic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
24R,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 inhibited human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) proliferation, decreased 1a-hydroxylase expression, thereby reducing the ability of hMSC to convert 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 to 1a,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, and promoted osteoblastic differentiation through increased alkaline phosphatase activity and Ca2+ mineralization. [Mol Endocrinol] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
IL-6-Accelerated Calcification by Induction of ROR2 in Human Adipose-Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Is STAT3 Dependent
Researchers investigated the effects of inflammatory cytokines on the mechanisms of calcification in human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [Rheumatology] Abstract

Protein Covalently Conjugated SU-8 Surface for the Enhancement of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Adhesion and Proliferation
SU-8 surface chemistry was modified by immobilizing fibronectin and collagen type I covalently using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxy silane, and cross-linker glutaraldehyde to increase surface biofunctionality. The effectiveness of this surface treatment to improve the adhesion and viability of mesenchymal stem cells was investigated. [Langmuir] Abstract

An Exploratory Clinical Trial for Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of Femoral Head by Cultured Autologous Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Augmented with Vascularized Bone Grafts
Scientists assessed the safety and efficacy of transplantation of cultured autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells mixed with ß-tricalcium phosphate in combination with vascularized bone grafts for the treatment of advanced stage idiopathic osteonecrosis of femoral head in a clinical trial. [Tissue Eng Part B Rev] Abstract

12/15-Lipoxygenase Deficiency Reduces Densities of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Dermis of Wounded and Unwounded Skin
Investigators determined the effect of 12/15-lipoxgenase deficiency on mesenchymal stem cell densities in the wounded and unwounded dermis. [Br J Dermatol] Abstract

Preconditioning of Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Sevoflurane to Improve Their Therapeutic Potential
Using an in vitro model of hypoxia and serum deprivation (H/SD), scientists investigated the hypothesis that sevoflurane preconditioning could protect mesenchymal stem cells against H/SD-induced apoptosis and improve their migration, proliferation, and therapeutic potential. [PLoS One] Full Article

5-Azacytidine Improves the Osteogenic Differentiation Potential of Aged Human Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells by DNA Demethylation
Decreased Nanog, Oct4 and Lin28A and increased Sox2 gene-expression was accompanied by an impaired osteogenic differentiation potential of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Ad-MSCs) isolated from old donors as compared to Ad-MSCs isolated from younger donors. [PLoS One] Full Article

Mesenchymal Cell Interaction with Ovarian Cancer Cells Induces a Background Dependent Pro-Metastatic Transcriptomic Profile
Scientists demonstrated that co-culture of ovarian cancer cells in direct cellular contact with mesenchymal stem cells induces broad transcriptomic changes related to enhance metastatic ability. [J Transl Med]

Effect of NK4 Transduction in Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Biological Characteristics of Pancreatic Cancer Cells
Mesenchymal stem cells expressing NK4 strongly inhibited proliferation and migration of the pancreatic cancer cell line SW1990 after co-culture. [Int J Mol Sci] Abstract | Download Full Article

Identification of Specific Cell-Surface Markers of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells from Subcutaneous and Visceral Fat Depots
Adipose-derived stem/stromal cells (ASCs) from subcutaneous fat and visceral fat of omental region were isolated and studied. High-content image screening of over 240 cell-surface markers identified several potential depot-specific markers of ASCs. [Stem Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract | Press Release

Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cells as a Pharmacological and Therapeutic Approach to Accelerate Angiogenesis
The authors summarize in detail the angiogenic factors found in the mesenchymal stem cells or multipotent stromal cells (MSC) secretome and their therapeutic mode of action in pathologies caused by limited blood vessel formation. Also, the application of MSC as a vehicle to deliver drugs and/or genes in (anti-)angiogenesis is discussed. [Pharmacol Ther] Abstract
