    TOP STORY
Inhibition of Akt/mTOR Attenuates Age-Related Changes in Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers showed that blocking of PI3K/Akt/mTOR prevents the development of an age related phenotype and maintains mesenchymal stem cell morphology of early passage cells with high clonogenic frequency and enhanced proliferative capacity. [Stem Cells] Abstract
Achieve Superior Differentiation of Mouse MSC & MEF into Osteoblasts with the New MesenCultâ„¢ Osteogenic Stimulatory Kit (Mouse)

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
MiR-335 Correlates with Senescence/Aging in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Inhibits Their Therapeutic Actions through Inhibition of AP-1 Activity
Scientists investigated the significance of microRNA (miR)-335 for the therapeutic potential of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Analysis of hMSCs in ex vivo culture demonstrated a significant and progressive increase in miR-335 that is prevented by telomerase. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Population Derived from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells Displays Potent Immunomodulatory and Therapeutic Properties
Researchers utilized a developmental precursor called the hemangioblast as an intermediate cell type in the derivation of a highly potent and replenishable population of mesenchymal stem cells from human embryonic stem cells. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract | Full Article | Press Release

Salvianolic Acid B Promotes Osteogenesis of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells through Activating ERK Signaling Pathway
Researchers investigated the effects of Salvianolic acid B on viability and osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells. [Int J Biochem Cell Biol] Abstract

A Multi-Compartment Holder for Spinner Flasks Improves Expansion and Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in 3D Scaffolds
Researchers designed a multi-compartment holder for three-dimensional (3D) cell culture, easily adaptable to spinner flasks. Here, the device was tested with human mesenchymal stem cells seeded in 3D porous chitosan scaffolds that were maintained in spinner flasks under dynamic conditions. [Tissue Eng] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Modulate Albumin-Induced Renal Tubular Inflammation and Fibrosis
Using a co-culture model of human proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs), scientists showed that concomitant stimulation of BM-MSCs by albumin excess was a prerequisite for them to attenuate albumin-induced IL-6, IL-8, TNF-a, CCL-2, CCL-5 overexpression in PTECs, which was partly mediated via deactivation of tubular NF-?B signaling. [PLoS One] Full Article

Comparison of Articular Cartilage Repair with Different Hydrogel-Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Composites in a Rat Model
Investigators explored the feasibility and efficacy of articular cartilage repair using composites of human umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cells and four different hydrogels in a rat model. [Stem Cells Res Ther] Abstract | Full Article

Can Arthroscopically Harvested Synovial Stem Cells Be Preferentially Sorted Using Stage-Specific Embryonic Antigen 4 Antibody for Cartilage, Bone, and Adipose Regeneration?
Researchers investigated the relation between stage-specific embryonic antigen 4 expression and synovium-derived stem cell lineage differentiation. [Arthroscopy] Abstract

Surface Modification on Polycaprolactone Electrospun Mesh and Human Decalcified Bone Scaffold with Synovium-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Affinity Peptide for Tissue Engineering
Investigators identified a seven amino acid peptide sequence through phage display technology that has a high specific affinity to synovium-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Characterization and In Vitro Differentiation Potency of Early-Passage Canine Amnion- and Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Related to Gestational Age
Scientists cytogenetically and molecularly characterized and followed the in vitro proliferation and differentiation potential of early-passage canine amniotic membrane mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and umbilical cord matrix MSCs isolated from fetuses at early and late gestational ages. [Mol Reprod Dev] Abstract

Characterization of Mesenchymal Stem Cells under the Stimulation of Toll-Like Receptor Agonists
Scientists demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells express functional Toll-like receptors 3 and 4, the Toll-like receptor families that recognize the signals of viral and bacterial mimics, respectively. [Dev Growth Differ] Abstract

Overexpression of Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase 1 in Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Enhance the Expression of Induced Endothelial Cells
Researchers studied the relationship between overexpression of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 and the expression of induced endothelial cells in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. [Lipids Health Dis]

    REVIEWS
Mechanisms of Tumor Escape from Immune System: Role of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Evidence points out the role of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC), both in epithelial solid tumors and hematological malignancies, in regulating tumor cell growth and immune response. The authors review this evidence and suggest that MSC can be a suitable target for a more efficient anti-tumor therapy. [Immunol Lett] Abstract

Novel Approaches to Lupus Drug Discovery Using Stem Cell Therapy. Role of Mesenchymal-Stem-Cell-Secreted Factors
The authors highlight the data on mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus and related mechanisms of actions. This data includes the recent evidence that MSC-secreted factors such as extracellular microvesicles are important mediators of MSC therapy. [Expert Opin Drug Discov] Abstract
