    TOP STORY
Abnormal Blood Stem Cells Reprogram Their Environment
Blood arises from stem cells in the bone marrow; in patients with a myelodysplastic disorder, defective stem cells reprogram their neighbors in the marrow to create a “niche” that promotes their own survival. A report by scientists suggests that blocking the molecules involved in this process may lead to an effective therapy against this life-threatening blood disorder. PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Molecular Imaging for Assessment of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Mediated Breast Cancer Therapy
Researchers found that tumors were significantly inhibited by human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell administration, and this effect was enhanced by ganciclovir application. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Prevent Hypertrophic Scar Formation via Inflammatory Regulation When Undergoing Apoptosis
Scientists locally injected human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) derived from bone marrow to treat hypertrophic scar formation, and explored the underlying mechanisms. They found that hMSC therapy efficiently regulated inflammation and prevented scar formation. [J Invest Dermatol] Abstract

Adrenaline Stimulates the Proliferation and Migration of Mesenchymal Stem Cells towards the LPS-Induced Lung Injury
Researchers found that adrenaline at 10 µM enhanced proliferation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) through both a- and ß-adrenergic receptors. Adrenaline promoted the migration of BMSCs towards lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-injured lung cells or lung tissue. [J Cell Mol Med] Full Article

Matrix Composition and Mechanics Directs Pro-Angiogenic Signaling from Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers showed how controlling the mechanical properties and protein composition of the extracellular matrix surrounding mesenchymal stem cells can guide pro-angiogenic signaling. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Downregulation of HDAC1 Is Involved in the Cardiomyocyte Differentiation from Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Myocardial Microenvironment
Investigators determined the acetylation regulatory mechanisms that may be involved in the directed cardiomyocyte differentiation from mesenchymal stem cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

Delayed Administration of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell Conditioned Media Significantly Improves Outcome after Retinal Ischemia in Rats
Researchers hypothesized that injection of bone marrow stem cell conditioned media after ischemia could rescue ischemic retina, and in this study they characterized the functional and histological outcomes, and mechanisms of this neuroprotection. [Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci] Abstract

Artificial Matrices with High-Sulfated Glycosaminoglycans and Collagen Are Anti-Inflammatory and Pro-Osteogenic for Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
The influence of artificial extracellular matrices on the interleukin-1ß-induced pro-inflammatory response of human mesenchymal stromal cells was studied. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Micro-Aggregates Do Not Influence Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Chondrogenesis
Researchers investigated the role of the cellular environment (paracrine vs juxtacrine signaling) in the chondrogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Mir-218 Contributes to the Transformation of 5-Aza/GF Induced Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells into Hematopoietic Cells through the MITF Pathway
Scientists demonstrated that umbilical cord-derived human mesenchymal stem cells are easily accessible and could be induced into cells with hematopoietic function. [Mol Biol Rep] Abstract

Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Express a Myofibroblastic Phenotype In Vitro: Comparison to Human Cardiac Myofibroblasts
Scientists report that, while human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells retain pluripotency, they adopt a myofibroblastic phenotype in culture and stain positive for the myofibroblast markers a-SMA, vimentin, NMMIIB, ED-A fibronectin, and collagen type 1 at each passage. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in the Antimicrobial Host Response of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Recipients with Graft-versus-Host Disease – Friends or Foes?
The authors focus on the available data from in vitro studies and animal models regarding the interaction of mesenchymal stromal cells with bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens. In a clinical part, they present the current information on infectious complications in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients who had received mesenchymal stromal cells as prophylaxis or treatment of graft-versus-host disease. [Leukemia] Abstract

An Update of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Biology and Their Clinical Uses
Stromal (mesenchymal) stem cells (MSCs) are being introduced into many clinical trials due to their ease of isolation and efficacy in treating a number of disease conditions in animal preclinical disease models. The aim of this review is to revise MSC biology, their potential translation in therapy, and the challenges facing their adaptation in clinical practice. [Arch Toxicol] Abstract
