    TOP STORY
A Comparison of Bone Regeneration with Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Muscle-Derived Stem Cells and the Critical Role of BMP
Although human skeletal muscle-derived stem cells (hMDSCs) can undergo osteogenic differentiation and form bone when genetically modified to express BMP2; it is still unclear whether hMDSCs are as efficient as human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMMSCs) for bone regeneration. Scientists aimed to address this question by performing a parallel comparison between hMDSCs and hBMMSCs to evaluate their osteogenic and bone regeneration capacities. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Electroacupuncture Promotes the Differentiation of Transplanted Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Pre-Induced with Neurotrophin-3 and Retinoic Acid into Oligodendrocyte-Like Cells in Demyelinated Spinal Cord of Rats
Researchers transplanted neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and retinoic acid pre-induced mesenchymal stem cells into a demyelinated spinal cord induced by ethidium bromide, and investigated whether EA treatment could promote NT-3 secretion in the demyelinated spinal cord. [Cell Transplant] Full Article

Positive Selection for Bone Morphogenetic Protein Receptor Type-IB (BMPR-IB) promotes Differentiation and Specification of Human Adipose-Derived Stromal Cells towards an Osteogenic Lineage
Human adipose-derived stromal cell subpopulations were prospectively isolated based on expression of BMPR-IB. Unsorted BMPR-IB(+) and BMPR-IB(-) cells were analyzed for their osteogenic capacity through histological staining and gene expression. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Correlating the Effects of BMP to Secreted Soluble Factors from Fibroblasts and Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Regulating Regenerative Processes In Vitro
Scientists investigated the effect of soluble factors secreted by fibroblasts and mesenchymal stem cells on the proliferation and migration of cells from the regeneration-competent and -incompetent regions of the mouse digit tip. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Human Exfoliated Deciduous Teeth (SHEDs) Induce Immune Modulatory Profile in Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells
SHEDs are readily accessible, but their immune regulatory properties have not been completely investigated. Researchers evaluated the SHEDs influence on dendritic cells differentiation, maturation, ability to activate T cells and to expand CD4+Foxp3+ T cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

Regulating Chondrogenesis of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells with a Retinoic Acid Receptor-Beta Inhibitor: Differential Sensitivity of Chondral Versus Osteochondral Development
Researchers investigated whether the synthetic retinoic acid receptor-β antagonist LE135 is able to drive in vitro chondrogenesis of human mesenchymal stromal cells or improve differentiation by suppressing hypertrophic chondrocyte development. [Cell Physiol Biochem] Full Article
