    TOP STORY
New Technique Allows Scientists to Identify Populations of Rare Stem Cells in Bone Marrow
Researchers identified three physical characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that can distinguish them from other immature cells found in the bone marrow. Based on this information, they plan to create devices that could rapidly isolate MSCs, making it easier to generate enough stem cells to treat patients. [Press release from Massachusetts Institute of Technology discussing online prepublication in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA ] Press Release | Abstract

Conversion of Th17 into IL-17Aneg Regulatory T Cells: A Novel Mechanism in Prolonged Allograft Survival Promoted by Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Supported Minimized Immunosuppressive Therapy
The authors found that when mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were used to induce long-term acceptance of allogeneic heart grafts in mice, the induction of regulatory T cells was preceded by development of a CD11bhiGr1int myeloid-derived immunosuppressive cell-mediated Th17 response. Non-Invasive Characterization of the Adipogenic Differentiation of Human Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells by HS-SPME/GC-MS
Using optimized procedures, researchers discovered that seven fatty acid methyl esters were only detected in adipogenic differentiated mesenchymal stromal cells and not in the mesenchymal stromal cells before differentiation. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Intermittent PTHrP(1-34) Exposure Augments Chondrogenesis and Reduces Hypertrophy of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Scientists evaluated whether intermittent supplementation of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), as opposed to constant treatment, can beneficially influence mesenchymal stromal cells chondrogenesis and explored molecular mechanisms below catabolic and anabolic responses. [Stem Cells Dev] Full Article

Paracrine-Mediated Neuroprotection and Neuritogenesis of Axotomized Retinal Ganglion Cells by Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells: Comparison with Human Bone Marrow and Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers investigated and compared the neurotrophic activity of human dental pulp stem cells, human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and human adipose-derived stem cells on axotomized adult rat retinal ganglion cells (RGC) in vitro in order to evaluate their therapeutic potential for neurodegenerative conditions of RGC. Testing Stem Cell Therapy in a Rat Model of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Role of Bone Marrow Stem Cells and Stem Cell Factor in Mucosal Regeneration
Scientists explored a role of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells and soluble stem cell factor in gastrointestinal mucosa regeneration in a rat model of inflammatory bowel diseases. [PLoS One] Full Article

Effects of Different Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Sources and Delivery Routes in Experimental Emphysema
Investigators assessed whether the effects of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) on lung inflammation and remodeling in experimental emphysema would differ according to MSC source and administration route.

Comparison of Therapeutic Characteristics of Islet Cell Transplantation Simultaneous with Pancreatic Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation in Rats with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Researchers investigated the effect of pancreatic mesenchymal stem cell transplantation simultaneous with islet cell transplantation on islet liveliness and thus on the treatment of diabetes in type 1 diabetic rats.

Curcumin-Induced Heme Oxygenase-1 Expression Prevents H2O2-Induced Cell Death in Wild Type and Heme Oxygenase-2 Knockout Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
In order to analyze potential modulatory effects of the heme oxygenase (HO)-system on adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ASC) survival, wildtype and HO-2 knockout ASCs were pre-treated with HO-activity modulators, or downstream effector molecules biliverdin, bilirubin, and CO before co-exposure of ASCs to a toxic dose of H2O2. Myocardin and Pdx-1 Synergistically Induce hMSCs to Differentiate into Insulin Secreting Cells
Researchers investigated a new method to induce the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) into insulin secretion cells and explored its molecular mechanisms. They investigated in vitro differentiation of hMSCs by overexpression of myocardin and pdx-1. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract
