    TOP STORY
Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Form Vascular Tubes when Placed in Fibrin Sealant and Accelerate Wound Healing In Vivo
Researchers developed a fibrin formulation that allows adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells to form tubular structures in vitro. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Urokinase Type Plasminogen Activator Mediates Interleukin-17-Induced Peripheral Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cells Motility and Transendothelial Migration
Scientists studied the role of interleukin-17 (IL-17) on peripheral blood (PB) derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) migration and transmigration across endothelial cells. IL-17 increased PB-MSCs migration in a wound healing assay as well as cell mobilization from collagen gel. [Biochim Biophys Acta] Abstract

Licochalcone A Up-Regulates of FasL in Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Strengthen Bone Formation and Increase Bone Mass
Researchers found that 0.35 mg/L licochalcone A had a strong effect in increasing the osteogenic differentiation and mineralization of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells both in vivo and in vitro by up-regulating FasL and further playing a role in regulating the ERK and GSK-3β-catenin systems. [Sci Rep] Full Article

A Decline in Wnt3a Signaling Is Necessary for Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Proceed to Replicative Senescence
Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays a functional role as a key regulator of self-renewal and differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and thus Wnt/β-catenin signaling and cellular senescence might be closely connected. Scientists show that the expression levels of canonical Wnt families decrease as MSCs age during subculture. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Randomized Placebo-Controlled Phase II Trial of Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Multiple Sclerosis
Uncontrolled studies of mesenchymal stem cells in multiple sclerosis suggested some beneficial effect. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover Phase II study researchers investigated their safety and efficacy in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients. [PLoS One] Full Article

Tissue Engineering of Rat Bladder Using Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Bladder Acellular Matrix
Researchers proposed the use of bladder acellular matrix seeded with marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells for bladder tissue engineering. They optimized a protocol for decellularization of bladder tissue from different species including rat, rabbit and swine. [PLoS One] Full Article

Ovariectomized Rats with Established Osteopenia have Diminished Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Bone Marrow and Impaired Homing, Osteoinduction and Bone Regeneration at the Fracture Site
Scientists investigated deleterious changes that take place in mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and its fracture healing competence in ovariectomy (Ovx)-induced osteopenia. MSC from bone marrow of ovary intact and Ovx rats was isolated. Technetium hexamethylpropylene amine oxime labeled MSC was systemically transplanted to rats and fracture tropism assessed by SPECT/CT. [Stem Cell Rev] Abstract

Effect of T3 Hormone on Neural Differentiation of Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells
Researchers explored the effects of T3 treatment on neural differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). ADSCs were harvested from human adipose tissue, after neurosphere formation, and during final differentiation, treatment with T3 was performed. [Cell Biochem Funct] Abstract

Effects of Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein on Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2-Induced Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists used liposomes to transfect mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with plasmid encoding cartilage oligomeric matrix protein and then induced the transfected MSCs to differentiate in osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation media containing BMP-2. [Orthop Surg] Abstract

Gene Expression of Tendon Markers in Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Derived from Different Sources
Scientists assessed and compared the expression of tendon extracellular matrix proteins and tendon differentiation markers in mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) derived from different sources as well as in native tendon tissue. MSC isolated from equine bone marrow, adipose tissue, umbilical cord tissue, umbilical cord blood and tendon tissue were characterized and then subjected to mRNA analysis by real-time polymerase chain reaction.
