    TOP STORY
Therapeutic Efficacy of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in the Repair of Established Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury in the Rat
Researchers wished to determine the therapeutic potential of human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) in repairing the rodent lung. Human MSC’s enhanced lung repair, restoring oxygenation compared to vehicle or fibroblast therapy, respectively. [Anesthesiology] Abstract
NEW MesenPure™ Highly Enriched Mouse MSC Cultures Without the Wait FREE Sample Request

Sox11-Modified Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) Accelerate Bone Fracture Healing: Sox11 Regulates Differentiation and Migration of MSCs
Scientists investigated the role of SRY-related high-mobility group box 11 (Sox11) in regulating trilineage differentiation and migration of MSCs, and explored the effect of systemically administrated Sox11-modified MSCs on bone fracture healing using the rat model of open femur fracture. [FASEB J] Abstract

Hypoxia-Cultured Human Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Are Non-Oncogenic and Have Enhanced Viability, Motility, and Tropism to Brain Cancer
Researchers investigated the effects hypoxic culture conditions have on primary intraoperatively derived human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs). hAMSCs cultured under hypoxia remained multipotent, capable of differentiation into osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic lineages. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

CXCR4 Overexpression in Mesenchymal Stem Cells Facilitates Treatment of Acute Lung Injury in Rats
The influence of CXCR4 expression on migration, proliferation, differentiation, and paracrine effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) was examined in vitro. The in vivo properties of CXCR4-MSCs were also investigated in a model of acute lung injury in rats induced by lipopolysaccharide. [J Biol Chem]

Disturbed Angiogenic Activity of Adipose-Derived Stromal Cells Obtained from Patients with Coronary Artery Disease and Diabetes Mellitus Type 2
Scientists analyzed if adipose-derived stromal cells properties are attenuated in patients with chronic diseases such as coronary artery disease and diabetes mellitus type 2. [J Transl Med] Abstract | Full Article

Autologous Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy in Combination with Everolimus to Preserve Renal Structure and Function in Renal Transplant Recipients
Scientists tested the hypothesis that mesenchymal stromal cells treatment, in combination with the mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor everolimus, facilitates tacrolimus withdrawal, reduces fibrosis and decreases the incidence of opportunistic infections compared to standard tacrolimus dose. [J Transl Med]

In Vitro Assessment of Nanosilver-Functionalized PMMA Bone Cement on Primary Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Osteoblasts
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement functionalized with silver nanoparticles and/or gentamicin were tested regarding their biocompatibility with bone forming cells. Influences on viability, cell number and differentiation of primary human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and MSCs cultured in osteogenic differentiation media caused by the implant materials were studied. [PLoS One] Full Article

PDGF-AA Promotes Osteogenic Differentiation and Migration of Mesenchymal Stem Cell by Down-Regulating PDGFRα and Derepressing BMP-Smad1/5/8 Signaling
Researchers show that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-AA, but not -AB or -BB, could activate the BMP-Smad1/5/8 pathway in mesenchymal stem cells, which requires BMPRIA as well as PDGFRα. [PLoS One]

Multiscale Modeling of Trabecular Bone Marrow: Understanding the Micromechanical Environment of Mesenchymal Stem Cells during Osteoporosis
Scientists developed a multiscale model that discretely represents the cellular constituents of trabecular bone marrow and applied this model to characterize mechanical stimulation of mesenchymal stem cells in vivo. [J Biomech Eng] Abstract

Implantation of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Ischemic Stroke: Perspectives and Challenges
The authors provide an update role of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) implantation in the treatment of ischemic stroke. With the unique “immunosuppressive and immunoprivilege” property, hUC-MSCs are advised to be an important candidate for allogeneic cell treatment. [Front Med] Abstract
