    TOP STORY
ATF4 Licenses C/EBPβ Activity in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Primed for Adipogenesis
Scientists uncovered a novel mechanism licensing transcription in human mesenchymal stem cells adipogenically primed by confluence. Prior to adipogenesis, confluency promotes heterodimer recruitment of the bZip transcription factors C/EBPβ and ATF4 to a non-canonical C/EBP DNA sequence. [eLife]

Achieve Superior Differentiation of Mouse MSC & MEF into Osteoblasts with the MesenCult™ Osteogenic Stimulatory Kit (Mouse)

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
NELL-1 in the Treatment of Osteoporotic Bone Loss
Scientists showed that Nell-1-haploinsufficient mice have normal skeletal development but undergo age-related osteoporosis, characterized by a reduction in osteoblast:osteoclast ratio and increased bone fragility. [Nat Commun] Full Article | Press Release

Human Mesenchymal Stem (Stromal) Cells Promote the Resolution of Acute Lung Injury in Part through Lipoxin A4
Investigators tested the hypothesis that human mesenchymal stem (stromal) cells promote the resolution of acute lung injury in part through the effects of a specialized proresolving mediator lipoxin A4. [J Immunol] Abstract

Nanoplex-Mediated Co-Delivery of Fibroblast Growth Factor and Bone Morphogenetic Protein Genes Promotes Osteogenesis in Human Adipocyte-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The authors employed plasmids independently encoding bone morphogenetic protein 2 and human fibroblast growth factor-2 complexed with polyethylenimine to transfect human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADMSCs) in vitro. The polyplexes were characterized for size, surface charge, in vitro cytotoxicity and transfection ability in hADMSCs. [Mol Pharm] Abstract

Targeted Neural Differentiation of Murine Mesenchymal Stem Cells by a Protocol Simulating the Inflammatory Site of Neural Injury
Researchers showed that mouse adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells can be effectively differentiated into cells expressing neuronal cell markers. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Attenuate Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A-Induced Toxic Shock
The effect of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) on bacterial toxin-induced inflammation was investigated. Intraperitoneal administration of ASCs rescued mice from lethal shock induced by staphylococcal enterotoxin A potentiated with lipopolysaccharide. [Infect Immun] Abstract

Different Tenogenic Differentiation Capacities of Different Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Presence of BMP-12
Three types of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exhibited similar fibroblast-like morphology and surface markers but different differentiation potentials toward adipogenic, osteogenic, and chondrogenic lineage fates. Bone marrow-derived MSCs showed the most superior in vitro tenogenic differentiation capacity, followed by synovial membrane-derived MSCs and then adipose-derived MSCs. [J Transl Med] Full Article

Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles Are Associated with Inorganic Phosphate-Induced Osteogenic Differentiation of Rat Bone Marrow Stromal Cells
Scientists demonstrated that calcium phosphate nanoparticles formed in cell culture media were implicated in the process of high inorganic phosphate mediated osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stromal cells. [Chem Biol Interact] Abstract

Biomineral/Agarose Composite Gels Enhance Proliferation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Osteogenic Capability
Scientists loaded mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on hydroxyapatite (HA)- or calcium carbonate (CaCO3)-formed agarose gel and cultured them with dexamethasone, which triggers the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. High alkaline phosphatase activity was detected on both the HA- and CaCO3-formed agarose gels; however, basal activity was only detected on bare agarose gel. [Int J Mol Sci]

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells of Osteosarcoma Patients Do Not Show Evidence of Neoplastic Changes during Long-Term Culture
To determine if mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) from osteosarcoma patients could be predisposed to malignant transformation, investigators cultured MSCs of nine osteosarcoma patients and five healthy donors for an average of 649 days. Also, they compared MSCs derived from osteosarcoma patients at diagnosis and from healthy donors using genome wide gene expression profiling. [Clin Sarcoma Res] Full Article
