Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Reduce Influenza A H5N1-Associated Acute Lung Injury In Vitro and In Vivo
The authors compared the extent to which avian influenza A/H5N1 virus and seasonal influenza A/H1N1 virus impair alveolar fluid clearance and protein permeability in an in vitro model of acute lung injury, defined the role of virus-induced soluble mediators in these injury effects, and demonstrated that the effects are prevented or reduced by bone marrow-derived multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells. IN VITRO

Antioxidants Inhibit Advanced Glycosylation End-Product-Induced Apoptosis by Downregulation of miR-223 in Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells
Scientists tested the hypothesis that antioxidants N-acetylcysteine and ascorbic acid 2-phosphate inhibit advanced glycosylation end products-induced apoptosis via a microRNA-dependent mechanism in human adipose tissue-derived stem cells. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Acute Stimulation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Cigarette Smoke Extract Affects Their Migration, Differentiation, and Paracrine Potential
Researchers studied the effect cigarette smoke extract has on the migration, differentiation, and paracrine potential of human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs). To mimic native conditions in vitro, AdMSCs were cultured in either monolayer or three-dimensional pellet cultures. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Inhibition of IKK/NF-κB Signaling Enhances Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Human Embryonic Stem Cells
The authors report that inhibition of IκB kinase (IKK)/nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling enhances differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into mesenchymal stromal cell (MSCs) by expediting the loss of pluripotent markers and increasing the expression of MSC surface markers. [Stem Cell Reports]

Clusterin/Akt Up-Regulation Is Critical for GATA-4 Mediated Cytoprotection of Mesenchymal Stem Cells against Ischemia Injury
Preliminary microarray studies showed that clusterin was prominently upregulated in mesenchymal stem cells overexpressing GATA-4. Scientists hypothesized that the upregulation of clusterin is involved in overexpression of GATA-4 mediated cytoprotection. [PLoS One] Full Article

Human Limbal Mesenchymal Stem Cells Express ABCB5 and Can Grow on Amniotic Membrane
Limbal mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were capable of trilineage differentiation, adhered to tissue culture plastic, expressed HLA class I and cell surface antigens associated with human MSC while having no/low expression of HLA class II and negative hematopoietic lineage markers. [Regen Med] Abstract

Toxicity Analysis of Various Pluronic F-68-Coated Carbon Nanotubes on Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The authors investigated the toxic effects of various Pluronic F-68-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes on rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [Chem Biol Interact] Abstract

    IN VIVO

Rapamycin Augments Immunomodulatory Properties of Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis
Investigators examined immunomodulatory effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein 35-55-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in C57BL/6 mice. [Mol Neurobiol] Abstract

The Effect of Exercise on the Early Stages of Mesenchymal Stromal Cell-Induced Cartilage Repair in a Rat Osteochondral Defect Model
Scientists assessed the effect of exercise on early the phase of cartilage repair following cell supplementation utilizing mesenchymal stromal cell intra-articular injection. [PLoS One] Full Article

The Impact of Epigenetics on Mesenchymal Stem Cell Biology
The authors analyze the main studies addressing the epigenetic changes in the mesenchymal stem cell landscape during in vitro cultivation and replicative senescence, as well as follow osteocyte, chondrocyte, and adipocyte differentiation. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Cutaneous Wound Healing: Novel Methods to Increase Cell Delivery and Therapeutic Efficacy
The authors critically reviewed the results of novel studies that show promise for the continued development of mesenchymal stem cells-based wound-healing therapies and provide direction for continued research in this field. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Abstract

Temple University Hospital Offering New Trial Using Donor Stem Cells to Treat Heart Failure
Temple University Hospital is participating in a nationwide, Phase III clinical trial investigating stem cells as a treatment for patients with chronic heart failure due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction. The trial, dubbed DREAM-HF, is a double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled trial investigating whether donor stem cells which are injected into the damaged portion of the heart can restore heart muscle function. [Temple University] Press Release
