Macrophage Phagocytosis Alters the MRI Signal of Ferumoxytol-Labeled Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Cartilage Defects
The authors evaluated in vitro and in vivo whether nanoparticle-labeled human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) showed distinct MR signal characteristics before and after phagocytosis by macrophages. They found that apoptotic nanoparticle-labeled hMSCs were phagocytosed by macrophages while viable nanoparticle-labeled hMSCs were not. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Mechanical Stimulation Orchestrates the Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Bone Marrow Stromal Cells by Regulating HDAC1
Scientists investigated whether mechanical loading regulates histone deacetylase (HDAC) expression directly and examined the role of HDACs in mechanical loading-triggered osteogenic differentiation and bone formation. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

MicroRNA-99a Regulates Early Chondrogenic Differentiation of Rat Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Targeting the BMPR2 Gene
Researchers showed that expression of miR-99a and miR-125b-3p were increased during early chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells derived from the Norwegian brown rat. MiR-99a knockdown promoted proteoglycan deposition and increased the expression of ACAN and COL2A1 during early chondrogenic differentiation. [Cell Tissue Res] Abstract

Immunomodulatory Properties of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Mesenchymal Cells
Scientists assessed the immunomodulatory potential of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-MSCs generated from periodontal ligament and gingival tissue. The iPSC-MSC lines exhibited a similar level of suppression of mitogen-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells proliferation compared to their respective parental fibroblast populations in vitro. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Comparative Ability of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Different Tissues to Limit Neutrophil Recruitment to Inflamed Endothelium
Investigators compared the effects of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) isolated from bone marrow, Wharton’s jelly, and trabecular bone on neutrophil recruitment to cytokine-stimulated endothelial cells (EC), using co-culture models with different degrees of proximity between MSC and EC. [PLoS One] Full Article

Gelatin Directly Enhances Neurogenic Differentiation Potential in Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells without Stimulation of Neural Progenitor Cell Proliferation
Investigators determined whether gelatin can directly enhance neurogenic differentiation potential in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) without proliferation of neural progenitor cells. MSCs comprised a high proportion of bone marrow-derived primary cells and gelatin induced significant increases in MSC proliferation during primary culture, and the proportion of MSCs was maintained at more than 99% throughout the subculture. [DNA Cell Biol] Abstract

Enhancement of Tendon-to-Bone Healing after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Using Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Genetically Modified with bFGF/BMP2
Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were infected with an adenoviral vector encoding bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) or basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Then, the infected BMSCs were surgically implanted into the tendon-bone interface. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Intraventricular Injections of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Activate Endogenous Functional Remyelination in a Chronic Demyelinating Murine Model
In order to achieve general remyelination in various brain structures simultaneously, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells were transplanted into the lateral ventricles of the cuprizone murine model. In this manner, the cells may secrete soluble factors into the cerebrospinal fluid and boost the endogenous oligodendrogenic potential of the subventricular zone. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

Transplantation of Human Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on a Bladder Acellular Matrix for Bladder Regeneration in a Canine Model
Scientists evaluated human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADSCs) combined with a bladder acellular matrix (BAM) for bladder regeneration. A BAM or BAM loaded with hADSCs (BAM/hADSCs) was used to repair partial cystectomy of the bladder in a canine model. [Biomed Mater] Abstract

Synergic Effects of Rehabilitation and Intravenous Infusion of Mesenchymal Stem Cells after Stroke in Rats
The authors investigated whether synergic effects of daily rehabilitation and intravenous infusion of mesenchymal stem cells has therapeutic effects after stroke in rats. [Phys Ther] Abstract
