PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)IN VITROResearchers investigated whether microparticle-mediated presentation of bioactive interferon-γ within three-dimensional spheroidal mesenchymal stem/stromal cell aggregates could precisely regulate and induce sustained immunomodulatory activity. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract | Full Article | Press Release Scientists hypothesized that optimization of ascorbate treatment would maximize the rejuvenation effect of decellularized extracellular matrix on expanded stem cells from human infrapatellar fat pad in both proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation. [Biomed Mater] Abstract Investigators evaluated the human skin as an alternative source of adult mesenchymal stem cells suitable for autologous cell transplantation strategies for spinal cord injury. [Cell Mol Neurobiol] Abstract IN VIVOScientists hypothesized that preconditioning of mesenchymal stromal cells with carbon monoxide ex vivo would promote further therapeutic benefit when cells are administered in vivo after the onset of polymicrobial sepsis in mice. [Crit Care Med] Abstract Researchers investigated the efficacy of local and intravenous mesenchymal stem cell administration to augment neuroregeneration in both a sciatic nerve cut-and-repair and rat hindlimb transplant model. [Sci Rep] Full Article Scientists performed comprehensive long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) profiling by lncRNA microarray analysis and identified a novel lncRNA, osteogenesis impairment-related lncRNA of periodontal mesenchymal stem cells (PDLSCs) from periodontitis patients, the expression of which was significantly decreased in PDLSCs from periodontitis patients and was upregulated by osteogenic induction. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article By interrogating the microarray data from osteoporosis patients, researchers revealed an upregulation of the epigenetic modifying protein lysine-specific demethylase 5A (KDM5A) and decreased Runt-related transcription factor 2 expression. INDUSTRY NEWSTissue Regeneration Therapeutics Inc. (TRT) announced that a team of Canadian researchers has for the first time shown that TRT’s engineered mesenchymal stromal cell product can be used to deliver therapeutically useful monoclonal antibodies more effectively than administration of the mAbs themselves. [Tissue Regeneration Therapeutics Inc. (PR Newswire Association LLC)] Press Release RetroSense Therapeutics LLC announced that the low dose cohort of patients has been safely dosed in the initial clinical trial to evaluate the safety of RST-001. No inflammation or ocular adverse events were seen in any of these patients, and biological activity has been confirmed. [RetroSense Therapeutics LLC (Business Wire)] Press Release | |

POLICY NEWSNIH Sets New Postdoc Stipend Levels In response to a new rule governing overtime pay in the United States, the National Institutes of Health announced its new, increased postdoc stipend levels, which will go into effect December 1st 2016. [Science Careers] Editorial | Notice Clinical trials in dogs and cats are booming. Over the past decade, researchers have conducted hundreds of studies on pets to discover new therapies and medicines. But despite some moderate successes, the field has yet to have a dramatic impact on human medicine—and some critics wonder whether it ever will. [Science] Editorial US Grants for Zebrafish Studies on the Rise A team at the NIH Office of Portfolio Analysis assessed trends in the agency’s funding of model-organism research between 2008 and 2015, through its R01 awards, the largest NIH grant program for individual investigators. Using a text-mining algorithm and manual searches, they studied grant data for four animal models. The analysis revealed that grants for zebrafish studies accounted for 0.8% of all R01 awards in 2008, but for 1.27% in 2015 — a rise of almost 60%. [Nature News] Editorial UK Government Gives Brexit Science Funding Guarantee British scientists say they’re relieved by a government promise to guarantee them funding for existing EU research projects, even after the country leaves the European Union. But the reassurance only partly allays concerns about Brexit’s effect on UK science. [Nature News] Editorial
