[Theranostics] Full Article Therapeutic Effects of Human Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Acute Lung Injury Mice Scientists found that intratracheal administration of human umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells significantly improved survival and attenuated the lung inflammation in lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury mice. [Sci Rep] Full Article The authors investigated the therapeutic potential of the Agouti-related peptide, which is secreted by human mesenchymal stem cells, in terms of its effect on the regulation of proteasome activity in Alzheimer’s disease. [Sci Rep] Full Article Oxidative Status Predicts Quality in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Researchers aimed to determine whether low or high oxidative status of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) correlate with changes in cell expansion and differentiation potentials. They investigated functional aspects of mitochondria, such as cell metabolic activity indicators and expression of antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, they tested if senescence-induced changes in oxidative status of MSC could be counteracted by methylene blue, an alternative mitochondrial electron transfer known to enhance cell bioenergetics. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article TRIM33 Is Essential for Osteoblast Proliferation and Differentiation via BMP Pathway Tripartite motif containing 33 (TRIM33) functions both as a positive and negative regulator of the TGF-β/BMP pathway in tumors; however, its effect and mechanism during osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, which involves the TGF-β/BMP pathway is not defined. Scientists used mouse C3H10T1/2 mesenchymal stem cell line and MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts to investigate the role of TRIM33 during this process. Researchers attempted to identify genes involved in such putative mechanisms via microarray analysis using a mouse chondrogenic cell line, N1511. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract Melanoma-Induced Anemia Could Be Rescued by Sca-1+ Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Mice In cancer-related anemia (CRA) model mice, the authors found that the number of lin–c-kit+Sca-1+ and Sca-1+ mesenchymal stromal cells was decreased. And CRA resulted in an increased number of proerythroblasts and basophilic erythroblasts, and decreased number of orthochromatic erythroblasts. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract Researchers profiled the protein content of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from expanded CD133+ cells and bone marrow-derived human mesenchymal stem cells with the intention of better understanding the functions performed by these vesicles/cells and delineating the most appropriate use of each EV in future therapeutic procedures. [Stem Cell Rev] Abstract Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3) inhibitors are compounds that can induce the Wnt signaling pathway, which is involved in chondrogenesis and cartilage development. Scientists investigated the influence of lithium chloride and SB216763 synergistically with TGF-β3 on chondrogenic differentiation in human mesenchymal stem cells derived from Wharton’s jelly tissue.
