    TOP STORY

Microglia Jointly Degrade Fibrillar Alpha-Synuclein Cargo by Distribution through Tunneling Nanotubes

Researchers found that microglia exposed to α-synuclein established a cellular network through the formation of F-actin-dependent intercellular connections, which transferred α-syn from overloaded microglia to neighboring naive microglia where the α-syn cargo got rapidly and effectively degraded.

SON Drives Oncogenic RNA Splicing in Glioblastoma by Regulating PTBP1/PTBP2 Switching and RBFOX2 Activity

Scientists identified SON as a master regulator that activated PTBP1-mediated oncogenic splicing while suppressing RBFOX2-mediated non-oncogenic neuronal splicing in glioblastoma multiforme.

A High-Risk Retinoblastoma Subtype with Stemness Features, Dedifferentiated Cone States and Neuronal/Ganglion Cell Gene Expression

Using multi-omics data, investigators demonstrated the existence of two retinoblastoma subtypes. They expressed markers of less differentiated cone together with neuronal/ganglion cell markers with marked inter- and intra-tumor heterogeneity.

The Transcription Factor BCL11A Defines Distinct Subsets of Midbrain Dopaminergic Neurons

Researchers showed that the transcription factor BCL11A was expressed in a subset of midbrain dopaminergic (mDA) neurons in the developing and adult murine brain and in a subpopulation of pluripotent-stem-cell-derived human mDA neurons.

Transferrin-Pep63-Liposomes Accelerate the Clearance of Aβ and Rescue Impaired Synaptic Plasticity in Early Alzheimer’s Disease Models

Scientists determined that Pep63, a small peptide, had a neuroprotective effect on synaptic plasticity and memory. They developed novel and multifunctional liposomes targeting both Aβ oligomers and fibrils based on a liposome delivery system.

Microglial ASD-Related Genes Are Involved in Oligodendrocyte Differentiation

The authors investigated the role of microglial chromodomain-helicase DNA-binding protein 8 and tuberous sclerosis complex 2 in cytokine expression, phagocytosis activity, and neuro/gliogenesis from neural stem cells in vitro.

The Noncoding RNA LINC00152 Conveys Contradicting Effects in Different Glioblastoma Cells

In search of novel putative therapeutic RNA targets researchers investigated the role of the oncogenic long noncoding RNA LINC00152 in A172 glioblastoma cells.

Regulation of Gliomagenesis and Stemness through Acid Sensor ASIC1a

As the tumor microenvironment is typically acidic due to increased glycolysis and consequently leads to an increased production of lactic acid in tumor cells, the role of acid‑sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a), an acid sensor, was explored as a tumor suppressor in gliomagenesis and stemness.

Cend1 and Neurog2 Efficiently Reprogram Human Cortical Astrocytes to Neural Precursor Cells and Induced-Neurons

Scientists investigated the neuronal reprogramming capacity of CEND1 and/or Neurogenin-2 (NEUROG2) upon their overexpression on primary human adult cortical astrocytes.

Mechanisms Governing Activity-Dependent Synaptic Pruning in the Developing Mammalian CNS

Researchers discuss how developmental pruning programs may go awry in neurodevelopmental disorders of the human CNS, focusing on autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.

The Case for Low-Level BACE1 Inhibition for the Prevention of Alzheimer Disease

The authors discuss the status of β-site amyloid precursor protein (APP)-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE) inhibitors and suggest ways in which the results of the discontinued trials can inform the development of future clinical trials of BACE inhibitors and related secretase modulators as preventative therapies.
