Calreticulin Promotes EMT in Pancreatic Cancer via Mediating Ca2+
Dependent Acute and Chronic Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress

Researchers investigated the potential role and mechanism of calreticulin in regulating intracellular free Ca2+ dependent acute and chronic endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in pancreatic camcer in vitro and vivo.

Regulation of Somatostatin Secretion by Insulin and Glucagon in Mouse Pancreatic Islets

Scientists demonstrated that somatostatin and glucagon secretion were linked in a reciprocal feedback cycle with somatostatin inhibiting glucagon secretion at low and high glucose levels, and glucagon stimulating somatostatin secretion via the glucagon and GLP-1 receptors.

    Pancreas-Specific
Deletion of Protein Kinase D Attenuates Inflammation, Necrosis, and Severity of Acute Pancreatitis

Investigators generated a mouse model with pancreas-specific deletion of PKD3, the predominant PKD isoform in mouse pancreatic acinar cells, by crossing Pkd3flox/flox mice with Pdx1-Cre transgenic mice which express Cre recombinase under the control of the mouse Pdx1 promoter.

    Co-impairment
of Autonomic and Glucagon Responses to Insulin-Induced Hypoglycemia in Dogs with Naturally-Occurring Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

Plasma glucagon responses during hyperinsulinemic-hypoglycemic clamps were assessed in dogs with spontaneous diabetes and healthy non-diabetic dogs. Plasma C-peptide responses to intravenous glucagon were measured to assess endogenous insulin secretion. Plasma pancreatic polypeptide, epinephrine and norepinephrine were measured as indices of parasympathetic and sympathoadrenal autonomic responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia.

Modulates Pancreatic β-Cell Membrane Potential through Src Kinase-Mediated Phosphorylation of NMDA Receptors

Scientists report that leptin augmented NMDA subtype of glutamate receptors function via Src kinase-mediated phosphorylation of the GluN2A subunit.

Lifetime Metabolic Mapping of Hypoxia-Induced Damage in Pancreatic Pseudo-Islets

Researchers incorporated fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy into a pancreas‐on‐chip system to establish a protocol to non‐invasively assess the viability and functionality of pancreatic β‐cells in a 3D in vitro model.

    PANCREATIC CANCER

Suppression of Pancreatic Cancer Liver Metastasis by Secretion-Deficient ITIH5

Investigators expressed mutant ITIH5 with deletion of the N-terminal secretion sequence (ITIH5Δs) in highly metastatic human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cell lines. They used a human tissue microarray to compare ITIH5 levels in uninvolved pancreas, primary and metastatic PDAC.

    Neurotensin
Receptor 1 Signaling Promotes Pancreatic Cancer Progression

Scientists used sublines to screen molecular targets for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Among the genes with increased expression levels in the sublines, they focused on those encoding cell surface receptors that may be involved in the interactions between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment.

Lipopolysaccharide Stimulates the Upregulated Expression of the Pancreatic Cancer-Related Genes Regenerating Islet-Derived 3 A/G in Mouse Pancreas

The effects of systemic administration of Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide on gene expression were comprehensively explored in mouse pancreas that did not demonstrate any signs of inflammation.

    Developmentally-Inspired
Biomimetic Culture Models to Produce Functional Islet-Like Cells From Pluripotent Precursors

Scientists highlight the development of in vitro cell culture models that allow systematic studies of pancreatic cell mechanobiology in response to extracellular matrix proteins, biomechanical effects, soluble factor modulation of biomechanics, substrate stiffness, fluid flow and topography.
