    TOP STORY
Protein Complex Plays Role in Suppressing Pancreatic Tumors
A well-known protein complex responsible for controlling how DNA is expressed plays a previously unsuspected role in preventing pancreatic cancer, according to researchers. [Press release from Stanford University School of Medicine discussing online prepublication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA]

    DIABETES

Lentivirus Small Hairpin RNA Grb10 Targeting the Pancreas Induces Apoptosis and Improved Glucose Tolerance due to Decreased Plasma Glucagon Levels
Researchers hypothesized that growth factor receptor-bound protein-10 (GRB10) is involved in pancreatic apoptosis, as GRB10 binds with a family of cell-survival-related proteins implicated in apoptosis. [Diabetologia]
    Abstract

Reversal of Type 1 Diabetes via Islet Beta Cell Regeneration following Immune Modulation by Cord Blood-Derived Multipotent Stem Cells
In an open-label, phase I/II study, patients with type 1 diabetes received one treatment with the Stem Cell Educator. [BMC Med] Abstract | Press Release

The Expression of the Class I Glucose Transporter Isoforms in Human Embryonic Stem Cells, and the Potential Use of GLUT2 as a Marker for Pancreatic Progenitor Enrichment
Researchers analyzed changes in expression of class I glucose transporters (GLUT1-4) during human embryonic stem cell and human induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation, from undifferentiated cells to 28 day old embryoid bodies. Researchers also examined the potential use of GLUT2 as a marker for differentiating pancreatic progenitor cells. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

FoxO1 as a Double-Edged Sword in the Pancreas: Analysis of Pancreas and β Cell-Specific FoxO1 Knockout Mice
Here, scientists investigate the physiological roles of FoxO1 in the pancreas by generating pancreas-specific and β cell-specific FoxO1 knockout mice and analyzing the metabolic parameters and pancreatic morphology under two different conditions of increased metabolic demand: high fat high sucrose diet and db/db background. [Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab] Abstract

Asparagus officinalis Extract Controls Blood Glucose by Improving Insulin Secretion and β-Cell Function in Streptozotocin-Induced Type 2 Diabetic Rats
This present study suggests that A. officinalis extract exerts anti-diabetic effects by improving insulin secretion and β-cell function, as well as the antioxidant status. [Br J Nutr] Abstract

Characterization of a Novel Functional Protein in the Pancreatic Islet: Islet Homeostasis Protein Regulation of Glucagon Synthesis in α Cells
Scientists have identified a novel protein in bone marrow-derived insulin-producing cells. Here they characterize this protein, hereby named islet homeostasis protein, in the pancreatic islet. [Pancreas]
    Abstract | Press Release

    PANCREATIC CANCER

Myxoma Virus Sensitizes Cancer Cells to Gemcitabine and Is an Effective Oncolytic Virotherapeutic in Models of Disseminated Pancreatic Cancer
The efficacy of Myxoma virus as monotherapy or in combination with gemcitabine was evaluated in intraperitoneal dissemination models of pancreatic cancer. [Mol Ther] Abstract

DJ-1 Promotes Invasion and Metastasis of Pancreatic Cancer Cells by Activating SRC/ERK/uPA
Here, researchers investigated the role of DJ-1 in tumor invasion and metastasis of pancreatic cancer, and showed that DJ-1 is up-regulated in 68.5% of pancreatic cancer specimens, correlated with tumor stage, and predictive of short overall survival. [Carcinogenesis] Abstract

Overexpression and Oncogenic Function of Aldo-Keto Reductase Family 1B10 (AKR1B10) in Pancreatic Carcinoma
The aim of this study was to examine the expression and oncogenic role of AKR1B10 in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. [Mod Pathol] Abstract

Effects of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling Pathway Inhibition on the Development of Cerulein-Induced Acute Pancreatitis in Mice
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of PD98059 [2-(2-amino-3-methoxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one], a highly selective inhibitor of mitogen-activated protein/extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 activation, on the development of acute pancreatitis. [Pancreas] Abstract
