LABORATORY RESEARCH Astrocyte Elevated Gene-1 (AEG-1) Functions as an Oncogene and Regulates Angiogenesis Researchers provide definitive evidence that astrocyte-elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) is indeed a transforming oncogene and show that stable expression of AEG-1 in normal immortal cloned rat embryo fibroblast cells induces morphological transformation and enhances invasion and anchorage-independent growth in soft agar, two fundamental biological events associated with cellular transformation. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] CaM Kinase Kinase Beta-Mediated Activation of the Growth Regulatory Kinase AMPK is Required for Androgen-Dependent Migration of Prostate Cancer Cells Using cellular models of prostate cancer, researchers have determined that androgens 1) directly increase the expression of a Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase beta (CaMKKbeta) splice variant and 2) increase functional CaMKKbeta protein levels as determined by the phosphorylation of both CaMKI and AMP-activated protein kinase, two of CaMKKbeta’s primary substrates.
