    TOP STORY
Secreted Protein, Acidic and Rich in Cysteine-Like 1 (SPARCL1) Is Down Regulated in Aggressive Prostate Cancers and Is Prognostic for Poor Clinical Outcome
Scientists report the down-regulation of the gene, Sparcl1, a secreted protein, acidic and rich in cysteine family matricellular protein, during invasive phases of prostate development and regeneration. [P Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract | Press Release

Detect 7 times more prostate epithelial progenitors with ProstaCult

    LABORATORY RESEARCH

MicroRNA Regulation of Oncolytic Adenovirus 6 for Selective Treatment of Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer
Scientists generated a novel oncolytic adenovirus, adenovirus 6 microRNA (Ad6miR). Cytotoxicity assay using primary or established prostate cancer cell lines showed robust oncolytic activity of Ad6miR. [Mol Cancer Ther] Abstract

Myopodin Isoforms Alter the Chemokinetic Response of PC3 Cells in Response to Different Migration Stimuli via Differential Effects on Rho-ROCK Signaling Pathways
Investigators showed that myopodin affects the chemokinetic, rather than the chemotactic, properties of PC3 prostate cancer cells. [Carcinognesis] Abstract

Autophagy Modulators Sensitize Prostate Epithelial Cancer Cell Lines to TNF-Alpha-Dependent Apoptosis
The apoptosis of prostate epithelial cancer cells LNCaP and PC3 was investigated upon treatment with the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine and the autophagy inducer rapamycin, in combination with TNF-alpha. [Apoptosis] Abstract

Proteomic Profiling of Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer Cell Lines Reveals a Role for Protein S during the Development of High Grade and Castrate-Resistant Prostate Cancer
Researchers showed that Protein S 1 is elevated in high grade and castrate-resistant prostate cancer, and could serve as a potential biomarker of aggressive disease. [J Biol Chem] Full Article

Targeting Androgen Receptor to Suppress Macrophage-Induced Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Development
Researchers established an in vitro co-culture model with prostate epithelial and macrophage cell lines to study the potential impacts of infiltrating macrophages in the BPH development and found that co-culturing prostate epithelial cells with macrophages promoted migration of macrophages. [Mol Endocrinol] Abstract

Synergistic and Selective Cancer Cell Killing Mediated by the Oncolytic Adenoviral Mutant AdΔΔ and Dietary Phytochemicals in Prostate Cancer Models
Scientists identified novel functions for AdΔΔ and phytochemicals in promoting cancer cell killing and apoptosis, suggesting the use of these natural nontoxic compounds might be a feasible and currently unexploited anti-cancer strategy. [Hum Gene Ther] Abstract

Targeting Androgen Receptor Leads to Suppression of Prostate Cancer via Induction of Autophagy
Investigators determined the role and regulatory effects of androgen receptor on the autophagy process of prostate cancer cells. [J Urology] Abstract

Potential Establishment of Lung Metastatic Xenograft Model of Androgen Receptor-Positive and Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer
Researchers established a mouse xenograft model of metastatic prostate cancer and investigated the relationship between metastasis and circulating tumor cells. [Urology] Abstract

Pseudolaric Acid B Induces Caspase-Dependent Apoptosis and Autophagic Cell Death in Prostate Cancer Cells
Investigators demonstrated that pseudolaric acid B was highly effective against both androgen-dependent and androgen-independent prostate cancer cells through the mechanisms involved in induction of G2/M cell cycle arrest, caspase-dependent apoptosis and autophagic cell death. [Phytother Res] Abstract

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

Aspirin Use and the Risk of Prostate Cancer Mortality in Men Treated with Prostatectomy or Radiotherapy
Researchers investigated whether use of anticoagulants was associated with the risk of death from prostate cancer. [J Clin Oncol] Abstract | Press Release | Video

Improved Overall Survival Trends of Men with Newly Diagnosed M1 Prostate Cancer: A SWOG Phase III Trial Experience
Scientists compared overall survival in three sequential phase III trials of men with hormone naïve, metastatic prostate cancer who received similar androgen deprivation therapy. [J Urology] Abstract

Randomized Phase II Study of Danusertib in Patients with Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer after Docetaxel Failure
Researchers determined the efficacy and toxicity of danusertib administered intravenously over two different dosing schedules with equivalent dose intensity in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer with progressive disease after docetaxel-based treatment. [BJU Int] Abstract

Register for Training Course: Air-Liquid Interface Culture of Primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells

The Reactive Stroma Microenvironment and Prostate Cancer Progression
This review discusses the co-evolution of reactive stroma and the biology of how reactive stroma-carcinoma interactions regulate cancer progression and metastasis are targets for new therapeutic approaches. [Endocr Relat Cancer] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS

U.S. FDA Grants Priority Review Of ZYTIGA® (Abiraterone Acetate) sNDA For Treatment of Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer before Chemotherapy
Janssen Research & Development, LLC, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted priority review to the supplemental new drug application (sNDA) for ZYTIGA® administered in combination with prednisone for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic after failure of androgen deprivation therapy. [Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies]

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission: Public Statement
The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission is pleased with the opinion issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Sherley, et al. vs. Sebelius, et al. regarding the federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research. The position taken by the Court allows this promising stem cell research to progress in the U.S., paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries that could ameliorate a multitude of debilitating diseases and disorders. [Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund, United States] Press Release

    POLICY NEWS

Republican Spending Plan Casts Shadow on Science
As chairman of the House of Representatives budget committee in the current Congress, Paul Ryan has crafted a federal spending plan that contrasts sharply with that of President Barack Obama. If carried out, Ryan’s plan could cut spending on non-defense-related research and development by 5%, or $3.2 billion, below the fiscal-year 2012 budget.
