    Epithelial Pten Controls Acute Lung Injury and Fibrosis by Regulating Alveolar Epithelial Cell Integrity
    Results highlighted epithelial Pten as a crucial gatekeeper controlling acute lung injury and lung fibrosis by modulating alveolar epithelial cell integrity, and the Pten/PI3K/Akt pathway as a potential therapeutic target in these intractable diseases. [Am J Respir Crit Care Med] Abstract

    Exome Sequencing Identifies Mutations in CCDC114 as a Cause of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia
    To identify mutations that cause primary ciliary dyskinesia, the authors performed exome sequencing on six unrelated probands with ciliary outer dynein arm defects. Mutations in CCDC114, an ortholog of the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii motility gene DCC2, were identified in a family with two affected siblings. [Am J Hum Genet] Abstract

    Haemophilus influenzae Protein F Mediates Binding to Laminin and Human Pulmonary Epithelial Cells
    Researchers showed that Protein F promotes binding of Haemophilus influenzae to laminin and primary bronchial epithelial cells. Analyses with recombinant proteins and synthetic peptides revealed that the N-terminal part of Protein F contains the host-interacting region. [J Infect Dis] Abstract

    Imaging and Characterization of Stretch-Induced ATP Release from Alveolar A549 Cells
    In the lungs, stretch is an important physical stimulus but its impact on ATP release, the underlying release mechanisms and transduction pathways are poorly understood. Scientists investigated the effect of unidirectional stretch on ATP release from human alveolar A549 cells by real-time luciferin-luciferase bioluminescence imaging coupled with simultaneous infrared imaging, to monitor the extent of cell stretch and to identify ATP-releasing cells.     Ciliated Cells of Pseudostratified Airway Epithelium do Not Become Mucous Cells after OVA Challenge
    Since pseudostratified airway epithelium contains distinct progenitor cells from simple columnar airway epithelium, the lineage relationships of progenitor cells to mucous cells may be different in these two epithelial types. Researchers therefore performed lineage tracing of the ciliated cells of the murine basal cell-containing airway epithelium in conjunction with the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of allergic lung disease.     Interleukin 23 Regulates Proliferation of Lung Cancer Cells in a Concentration-Dependent Way in Association with the Interleukin-23 Receptor
    Direct effects of interleukin 23 (IL-23) on tumor cells have been reported rarely, and contradictory effects have been observed. Researchers studied such effects of IL-23 in lung cancer cells in vitro and in vivo and explored the underlying mechanism. They found IL-23 receptor expression in tissues from lung adenocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma but not in lung squamous cell carcinoma tissue. [Carcinogenesis] Abstract

    Acquired Differential Regulation of Caspase-8 in Cisplatin-Resistant Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer
    Failure to efficiently induce apoptosis contributes to cisplatin resistance in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Researchers found that in H460 NSCLC cells, caspase-8 cleavage was induced by cisplatin and is dependent on death receptor 4, death receptor 5, Fas-associated protein with death domain, acid sphingomyelinase and ceramide synthesis.     PRR11 Is a Novel Gene Implicated in Cell Cycle Progression and Lung Cancer
    Investigators isolated and identified a novel gene, proline-rich protein 11 (PRR11), implicated in both cell cycle progression and lung cancer. PRR11 was overexpressed at both mRNA and protein levels in lung cancer tissues as compared with normal lung tissues. [Int J Biochem Cell Biol] Abstract

    Adeno-Associated Virus Vector Mediated Expression of an Oncogenic Retroviral Envelope Protein Induces Lung Adenocarcinomas in Immunocompetent Mice
    JSRV is a simple betaretrovirus that causes contagious lung cancer in sheep known as ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma and closely resembles human lung adenocarcinoma. The authors employed the use of a strong JSRV enhancer-promoter combination to express the JSRV envelope at high levels and demonstrated for the first time, lung tumor induction in immunocompetent mice.     Effect of ARHI on Lung Cancer Cell Proliferation, Apoptosis and Invasion In Vitro
    Researchers aimed to elucidate the effects of ARHI (aplysia ras homolog I) on several biological features of lung cancer cells, including growth, proliferation and invasion, to collect experimental evidence for the future biological treatment of human lung cancer. [Mol Biol Rep] Abstract
