    TOP STORY
Rhinovirus Infection Causes Steroid Resistance in Airway Epithelium through Nuclear Factor ?B and c-Jun N-Terminal Kinase Activation
Rhinovirus 16 infection impaired dexamethasone-dependent inhibition of IL-1ß-induced CXCL8 release, induction of mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase 1 gene expression, and binding of glucocorticoid receptor to glucocorticoid response element in airway epithelial cells. [J Allergy Clin Immunol] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Reduced Microtubule Acetylation in Cystic Fibrosis Epithelial Cells
Researchers identified that acetylated-a-tubulin content is reduced by approximately 40% compared to respective wild-type controls in both cultured cystic fibrosis cell models and primary cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator -/- mouse nasal epithelial tissue. [Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol] Abstract

Notch Signaling Downregulates MUC5AC Expression in Airway Epithelial Cells through Hes1-Dependent Mechanisms
Notch signaling regulated MUC5AC expression both in mouse mtCC1-2 cells and in human NCI-H292 cells. Several Hes-binding site N-boxes were identified in the 5′ region of both mouse and human MUC5AC promoters. [Respiration] Abstract

Effect of Secreted Lymphocyte Antigen-6/Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator Receptor-Related Peptide-1 (SLURP-1) on Airway Epithelial Cells
Researchers explored the effect of SLURP-1, signal through a7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, in the pathophysiology of airway inflammation. Cytokine production was examined using human epithelial cells. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Romo1 Expression Contributes to Oxidative Stress-Induced Death of Lung Epithelial Cells
Investigators showed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) modulator 1 (Romo1) mediates mitochondrial ROS production and apoptosis induced by oxidative stress in lung epithelial cells. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Modulation of ENaC, CFTR, and iNOS Expression in Bronchial Epithelial Cells after Stimulation with Staphylococcus epidermidis (94B080) and Staphylococcus aureus (90B083)
The authors investigated modulation of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC), mucins, proinflammatory cytokines, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in respiratory epithelial cells after Staphylococcus epidermidis 94B080 and Staphylococcus aureus 90B083 exposure. [APMIS] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

A Sesquiterpene Lactone Antrocin from Antrodia camphorata Negatively Modulates JAK2/STAT3 Signaling via MicroRNA let-7c and Induces Apoptosis in Lung Cancer Cells
Scientists found that antrocin inhibited cell proliferation in two non-small cell lung cancer cells, namely H441 and H1975. Antrocin dose-dependently suppressed colony formation and induced apoptosis as evidenced by activated caspase-3 and increased Bax/Bcl2 ratio. [Carcinogenesis] Abstract

APS8, a Polymeric Alkylpyridinium Salt Blocks a7 nAChR and Induces Apoptosis in Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma
Researchers showed that APS8 inhibits non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumor cell growth and activates apoptotic pathways. Furthermore, in NSCLC cells, APS8 reduced the adverse anti-apoptotic, proliferative effects of nicotine. [Mar Drugs] Abstract | Full Article

Downregulation of MicroRNA-182 Inhibits Cell Growth and Invasion by Targeting Programmed Cell Death 4 in Human Lung Adenocarcinoma Cells
Scientists performed methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium and colony formation assays to study the influence of microRNA-182 on proliferation of the lung cancer cell lines A549 and SPC-A-1. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

Influence on the Behavior of Lung Cancer H1299 Cells by Silencing SLC35F2 Expression
Solute Carrier Family 35 member F2 (SLC35F2) expression was markedly downregulated in a H1299 cell clone (transfected with the lentiviral vector harboring small interfering RNA targeting SLC35F2). Proliferation decreased significantly compared with that of non-transfected H1299 cells. [Cancer Cell Int]

MicroRNA-29a Regulates the Benzo[a]Pyrene Dihydrodiol Epoxide-Induced DNA Damage Response through Cdc7 Kinase in Lung Cancer Cells
Enforced microRNA-29 expression prevented the accumulation of Cdc7 in response to the environmental genotoxin, benzo[a]pyrene dihydrodiol epoxide present in cigarette smoke, resulting in aberrant checkpoint signaling and increased cell lethality. [Oncogenesis] Full Article

    REVIEWS
Bronchial Epithelium as a Target for Innovative Treatments in Asthma
Increasing evidence of a critical role played by the bronchial epithelium in airway homeostasis is opening new therapeutic avenues. The authors discuss the dynamic processes regulating airway mucus production. [Pharmacol Ther] Abstract
