    TOP STORY
UCLA Scientists Identify Link between Stem Cell Regulation and the Development of Lung Cancer
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers discovered the inner workings of the process thought to be the first stage in the development of lung cancer. Their study explains how factors that regulate the growth of adult stem cells that repair tissue in the lungs can lead to the formation of precancerous lesions. PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Behavioral Heterogeneity of Adult Mouse Lung Epithelial Progenitor Cells
Investigators introduce a method of airway micro-dissection which enabled them to study the progenitor behavior of pulmonary epithelial cells in region-specific contexts. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Chronic Alcohol Ingestion in Rats Alters Lung Metabolism, Promotes Lipid Accumulation, and Impairs Alveolar Macrophage Functions
Scientists studied the metabolic consequences of chronic alcohol consumption in rat lungs in vivo and in alveolar epithelial type II cells and alveolar macrophages in vitro. [Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol] Abstract

Cell Stress Induces Upregulation of Osteopontin via the ERK Pathway in Type II Alveolar Epithelial Cells
Investigators demonstrate the molecular mechanism of osteopontin (OPN) induction in type II alveolar epithelial cells (AEC II) and elucidate the functions of OPN in AEC II and lung fibroblasts. [PLoS One] Full Article

Accumulation of Metals in GOLD4 COPD Lungs is Associated with Decreased CFTR Levels
The effect of cigarette smoke on down-regulation of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CRTR) expression and function was assessed by researchers using primary human airway epithelial cells. [Respir Res] Abstract | Full Article

    LUNG CANCER

IL-1β-Mediated Repression of MicroRNA-101 Is Crucial for Inflammation-Promoted Lung Tumorigenesis
Scientists report that the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β is dramatically elevated in the serum of patients with non-small cell lung cancer. [Cancer Res] Abstract

IL-6 Enriched Lung Cancer Stem-Like Cell Population by Inhibition of Cell Cycle Regulators via DNMT1 Up-Regulation
Researchers demonstrate that IL-6 enriches the properties of lung cancer stem-like cells in A549 lung cancer cells cultured in spheroid medium. IL-6 also promotes sphere formation and stem-like properties of A549 cells by enhancing cell proliferation. [Int J Cancer] Abstract

KPT-330 Has Antitumor Activity against Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Scientists investigated the biologic and pharmacologic activities of a chromosome region maintenance 1 inhibitor against human non-small cell lung cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. [Brit J Cancer] Abstract

Cooperation of Tyrosine Kinase Receptor and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Signaling Enhances Migration and Dispersal of Lung Tumor Cells
Based on recent reports that tyrosine kinase receptor (TrkB) can also be transactivated through epidermal growth-factor receptor signaling and thus regulates migration of early neurons, scientists investigated the role of TrkB in migration of lung tumor cells. [PLoS One] Full Article
