    TOP STORY
New Insights into How Asthma ‘Pathways’ Could Be Blocked Revealed
Researchers have discovered new insights into how asthma may be caused by identifying three distinct groups of asthma patients characterized by the activity of different genes in an individual’s airways. [Press release from the University of Leicester discussing online prepublication in Science Translational Medicine] Press Release | Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Dexmedetomidine Attenuates Bilirubin-Induced Lung Alveolar Epithelial Cell Death In Vitro and In Vivo
In vitro, dexmedetomidine reversed the collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential, upregulation of cytochrome C, B cell leukemia 2 associated X protein, and cleaved-caspase 3 and 9 in A549 epithelial cells with bilirubin challenge. [Crit Care Med] Abstract

Stimulation of the RIG-I/MAVS Pathway by Polyinosinic:Polycytidylic Acid Upregulates IFN-β in Airway Epithelial Cells with Minimal Costimulation of IL-8
The authors identified conditions for polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid [poly(I:C)] to selectively upregulate IFN-β in airway epithelial cells without a concomitant inflammatory response. Using cell lines and primary airway epithelial cells, they observed that pure poly(I:C) stimulated IFN-β mainly through the TLR3/TRIF pathway and IL-8 through an unidentified pathway. [J Immunol] Abstract

CXCL9 Regulates TGF-β1–Induced Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition in Human Alveolar Epithelial Cells
Scientists investigated the presence and extent of epithelial to mesenchymal cell transition (EMT) and CXCR3 expression in human idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis surgical lung biopsies and assessed whether CXCR3 and its ligand CXCL9 modulate EMT in alveolar epithelial cells. [J Immunol] Abstract

Biological Impact of Cigarette Smoke Compared to an Aerosol Produced from a Prototypic Modified Risk Tobacco Product on Normal Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells
The toxicity of a modified risk tobacco product and the potential molecular mechanisms involved were investigated in high-throughput screening tests and whole genome transcriptomics analyses using human bronchial epithelial cells. [Toxicol In Vitro] Full Article

Ghrelin Inhibits Interleukin-6 Production Induced by Cigarette Smoke Extract in the Bronchial Epithelial Cell Via NF-κB Pathway
The authors evaluated whether ghrelin, a novel growth hormone-releasing peptide, can affect the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 production induced by cigarette smoke extract in the human bronchial epithelial cell line and its possible mechanism. [Inflammation] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Oncoprotein ZNF322A Transcriptionally Deregulates Alpha-Adducin, Cyclin D1 and p53 to Promote Tumor Growth and Metastasis in Lung Cancer
Overexpression of ZNF322A promoted cell proliferation and soft agar growth by prolonging cell cycle in S phase in multiple lung cell lines, including the immortalized lung cell BEAS-2B. In addition, ZNF322A overexpression enhanced cell migration and invasion, whereas knockdown of ZNF322A reduced cell growth, invasion and metastasis abilities in vitro and in vivo. miR-138 Inhibits Cell Proliferation and Reverses Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells by Targeting GIT1 and SEMA4C
The authors investigated the biological functions and molecular mechanisms of miR-138 in human non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). They found that the ectopic expression of miR-138 resulted in a significant inhibition of NSCLC growth and reversion of epithelial-mesenchymal transition. [J Cell Mol Med] Abstract

Leptospermum flavescens Constituent-LF1 Causes Cell Death through the Induction of Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis in Human Lung Carcinoma Cells
Researchers investigated and understand the ability of L. flavescens in inducing cell death in lung cancer cells. The cytotoxic potentials of the extraction yields were evaluated against two human non-small cell lung carcinoma cell lines using the MTT assay. [PLoS One] Full Article

The Targeted Inhibitory Effects of Human Amniotic Fluid Stem Cells Carrying CXCR4 Promoter and DAL-1 on Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma Growth
An A549 cell xenograft mouse model was created to assess the in vivo effect of differentially expressed in adenocarcinoma of the lung-1 (DAL-1) overexpression on non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) growth. They found that infection of adenovirus vector over-expressing DAL-1 increased the apoptosis of A549 NSCLC cells but not 16HBE normal human bronchial epithelial cells. [Gene Ther] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Development of PD-1/PD-L1 Pathway in Tumor Immune Microenvironment and Treatment for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
The authors discuss the basic principle of programmed death 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 pathway and its role in the tumorigenesis and development of non-small cell lung cancer. The clinical development of PD-1/PD-L1 pathway inhibitors, the main problems in the present studies and future research directions are also discussed. [Sci Rep] Full Article
