    Scientists Find Protein ‘Talks’ to Wrong Partners in Cystic Fibrosis
    Scientists have found evidence that a mutant protein responsible for most cases of cystic fibrosis is so busy “talking” to the wrong cellular neighbors that it cannot function normally and is prematurely degraded.     IL-27 Enhances Innate Immunity of Human Pulmonary Fibroblasts and Epithelial Cells through Upregulation of TLR4 Expression
    Investigators examined the immunopathological mechanisms for the activation of primary human lung fibroblasts and bronchial epithelial cells by IL-27. They demonstrated that IL-27 priming enhanced LPS-induced production of IL-6 and IL-8 from lung fibroblasts and bronchial epithelial cells via up-regulating TLR4 expression.     Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor-Dependent Up-Regulation of the Heterodimeric Amino Acid Transporter LAT1 (SLC7A5)/CD98hc (SLC3A2) by Diesel Exhaust Particle Extract in Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells
    Researchers analyzed the effects of diesel exhaust particle extract (DEPe) on LAT1/CD98hc expression in bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. Exposure to DEPe up-regulated LAT1 and CD98hc mRNA levels in a concentration-dependent manner, with DEPe EC50 values relevant to environmental situations. [Toxicol Appl Pharmacol] Abstract

    Interferon Response of the Cystic Fibrosis Bronchial Epithelium to Major and Minor Group Rhinovirus Infection
    Scientists assessed the antiviral response of cystic fibrosis and healthy bronchial epithelial cells to rhinovirus (RV) infection. They measured the levels of interferons (IFNs), pattern recognition receptors and IFN-stimulated genes upon infection with major and minor group RVs and poly(IC) stimulation.     Comparison of Innate Immune Responses towards Rhinovirus Infection of Primary Nasal and Bronchial Epithelial Cells
    Researchers used primary paired nasal epithelial cell and bronchial epithelial cell cultures established from healthy subjects and compared the replication of rhinoviruses belonging to the major and minor group, and the cellular antiviral and proinflammatory cytokine responses towards these viruses.     Dasatinib Induces DNA Damage and Activates DNA Repair Pathways Leading to Senescence in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cell Lines with Kinase-Inactivating BRAF Mutations
    No canonical pathways explain dasatinib-induced senescence in kinase-inactivating BRAF mutations (KIBRAF) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). To investigate the underlying mechanism, scientists used two approaches: gene expression and reverse phase protein arrays. Both approaches showed that DNA repair pathways were differentially modulated between KIBRAF NSCLC cells and those with wild-type BRAF. [Oncotarget] Full Article

    miR-181b Regulates Cisplatin Chemosensitivity and Metastasis by Targeting TGFβR1/Smad Signaling Pathway in NSCLC
    The authors identified miR-181b and its mechanism in the chemosensitivity and metastasis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). They found that miR-181b expression levels were lower in A549/DDP cells compared with A549 cells. [Sci Rep] Full Article

    Quercetin Inhibits Multiple Pathways Involved in Interleukin 6 Secretion from Human Lung Fibroblasts and Activity in Bronchial Epithelial Cell Transformation Induced by Benzo[a]Pyrene Diol Epoxide
    The authors showed that benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide-induced human bronchial epithelial cell transformation was enhanced by interleukin 6 in vitro. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract

    CD44 Is Functionally Crucial for Driving Lung Cancer Stem Cells Metastasis through Wnt/β-Catenin-FoxM1-Twist Signaling
    Scientists found that CD133+CD44+ cells which were derived from primary lung adenocarcinoma possessed cancer stem cell-like features. Furthermore, CD44 was demonstrated functionally crucial to drive metastatic potential of CD133+CD44+ lung cancer stem cell-like cells by in vitro and in vivo experiments. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract

    Study of Bioreductive Anticancer Agent RH-1-Induced Signals Leading the Wild-Type p53-Bearing Lung Cancer A549 Cells to Apoptosis
    Researchers investigated the involvement of different signaling molecules in cytotoxicity induced by RH-1 by using wild-type tumor suppressor p53-bearing non-small cell lung carcinoma A549 cells as a model. [Chem Res Toxicol] Abstract
