    TOP STORY
Inhibition of Endotoxin-Induced Airway Epithelial Cell Injury by a Novel Family of Pyrrol Derivates
Scientists evaluated the ability of a new family of 1,2,3,5-tetrasubstituted pyrrol compounds for attenuating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation and apoptosis in an in vitro LPS-induced airway epithelial cell injury model based on the first steps of the development of sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome. [Lab Invest] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
A Novel Approach for Ovine Primary Alveolar Epithelial Type II Cell Isolation and Culture from Fresh and Cryopreserved Tissue Obtained from Premature and Juvenile Animals
Researchers developed and optimized ovine lung tissue cryopreservation and primary alveolar epithelial type II cell culture methodologies for the purposes of dissecting mechanisms at the cellular level to elucidate responses observed in vivo. [PLoS One] Full Article

Carbocisteine Attenuates TNF-α-Induced Inflammation in Human Alveolar Epithelial Cells In Vitro through Suppressing NF-κB and ERK1/2 MAPK Signaling Pathways
Researchers investigated the mechanisms underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of carbocisteine in human alveolar epithelial cells in vitro. [Acta Pharmacol Sin] Abstract

Conjugated Linoleic Acids Suppress Inflammatory Response and ICAM-1 Expression through Inhibition of NF-κB and MAPK Signaling in Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells
Investigators evaluated the suppressive effects of cis-9, trans-11-conjugated linoleic acids on the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 in TNF-α-stimulated human bronchial epithelial cells. [Food Funct] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Functional Role of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 4 Gamma 1 (EIF4G1) in NSCLC
The authors report that the levels of EIF4G1 expression are much higher in non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines and tumor tissues than those in the normal lung cells and adjacent normal tissues from the same patients. Using shRNA to knock down EIF4G1 expression stably, they found EIF4G1 was required for NSCLC cell proliferation, anchorage-independent growth, migration and invasion. [Oncotarget] Full Article

Combination of Gefitinib and Pemetrexed Prevents the Acquisition of TKI-Resistance in NSCLC Cell Lines Carrying EGFR Activating Mutation
Researchers investigated the potential of combining gefitinib and pemetrexed in preventing the acquisition of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI)-resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines harboring EGFR exon 19 deletion. [J Thorac Oncol] Abstract

TRAIL-Coated Lipid-Nanoparticles Overcome Resistance to Soluble Recombinant TRAIL in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells
Apo2L/TRAIL-induced cytotoxicity was assessed on different non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines with different sensitivity to soluble TRAIL and on primary human tumor cells from three patients suffering from NSCLC cancer. [Nanotechnology] Abstract

Physalin A Induces G2/M Phase Cell Cycle Arrest in Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells: Involvement of the p38 MAPK/ROS Pathway
Scientists investigated the effects of physalin A on proliferation and cell cycle distribution of the human non-small cell lung cancer A549 cell line, and the potential mechanisms involved. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

A Novel Small Molecule, Rosline, Inhibits Growth and Induces Caspase-Dependent Apoptosis in Human Lung Cancer Cells A549 through a Reactive Oxygen Species-Dependent Mechanism
Using non-small cell lung cancer cell A549 to screen against a structurally novel and diverse synthetic small molecule library of 2,400 compounds, researchers identified a molecule named rosline that has strong anti-proliferation activity on A549 cells with a 50% cell growth inhibitory concentration of 2.87±0.39µM. [Cell Biol Int] Abstract
