The authors studied whether nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2 (NOD2) and engulfment and cell motility protein-1 (ELMO1) interacted with each other directly or indirectly to regulate bacterial sensing. They used stem-cell-based approaches to recapitulate normal gut physiology, and intestinal bacteria, Adherent invasive E. coli, as a stressor to assess gut function.
