Investigators found that a portion of retinal ganglion cell central nervous system projection neurons that survive after optic nerve crush injury were enriched for and upregulated fibronectin-interacting integrins Itga5 and ItgaV, and that fibronectin promoted long-term survival and long-distance axon regeneration of a portion of axotomized adult retinal ganglion cell in culture.
