Using spontaneous preclinical models of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with distinct immunotypes, scientists showed that the EPO/EPOR axis functions as an immunosuppressive switch in macrophages that maintains a T cell–deprived tumor microenvironment, thus posing a major barrier to effective antitumor immunity.
